Ring isn't just a product that allows users to surveil their neighbors. The company also uses it to surveil its customers.

An investigation by EFF of the Ring doorbell app for Android found it to be packed with third-party trackers sending out a plethora of customers’ personally identifiable information (PII). Four main analytics and marketing companies were discovered to be receiving information such as the names, private IP addresses, mobile network carriers, persistent identifiers, and sensor data on the devices of paying customers.

The danger in sending even small bits of information is that analytics and tracking companies are able to combine these bits together to form a unique picture of the user’s device. This cohesive whole represents a fingerprint that follows the user as they interact with other apps and use their device, in essence providing trackers the ability to spy on what a user is doing in their digital lives and when they are doing it. All this takes place without meaningful user notification or consent and, in most cases, no way to mitigate the damage done. Even when this information is not misused and employed for precisely its stated purpose (in most cases marketing), this can lead to a whole host of social ills.

I'm glad I don't have that doorbell. Just a standard issue wired old doorbell.

Not mine, I wouldn't own a house hold appliance hooked up to the internet.

I have the Nest Thermostat, for over 4 years now, it's been absolutely fucking great. It does and functions as it's meant to function and do, without the internet connection and the cloud communication.

Me: "Smart Speaker! Play easy listening Jazz please..."
Smart Speaker: "I'm not your bitch!"
Me: "You damn straight you ain't!"

Is anyone clueless enough, in this day and age, to be surprised by this? The only real problem is that I can't completely avoid the spying devices that my neighbors, police or other government government install.

No internet connected devices.
I also have no doorbell. Cellphones have replaced them anyway.

Not for me! I bought the PatrickNet door bell!

My version would push images directly to an app on your phone, no server involved.

Nah. Get a nice brass knocker. If you're going to do "push button" doorbell, then that button should just release a trap door that dumps the visitors into your moat filled with alligators... or your moat that doubles as the sewage tank — works fine either way.

Newest door bell should scan image of the finger print with data of released illegal immigrants.

This. There is zero need for a device to make a noise that someone is at your front door.

There are also other positives to no doorbells. I've lived in my current house for 6 years and haven't had one solicitor come to the door. It's amazing. As booger says, I have a cell phone. If you want to see me, you know how to get in touch. A clenched hand hitting the door is also practical, but I suppose maybe people are too soft now and worry about hurting their hand....
