OMFG, there will no doubt be a takedown notice from Quaker Oats' legal team coming soon to Vimeo!
33   Patrick   2018 Apr 3, 6:04pm

I'd very much welcome a point about something other than the other users.
34   Patrick   2018 Apr 4, 2:05pm

I really do not want to see any comments about any other user. It just begs for flame wars.
35   Malcolm   2018 Apr 4, 3:21pm

I still don't understand how this is controversial. Why is it that certain people (usually very left leaning) can't disagree with something without a personal insult? It astounds me that they really feel like their rights are being taken away. It's actually funny to read all of this need for clarification. Were they just not raised properly?
36   WookieMan   2018 Apr 4, 4:28pm

I didn't see a post on it, but I think U is banned now?
37   WookieMan   2018 Apr 4, 4:31pm

You son of a bitch!
38   WookieMan   2018 Apr 4, 4:33pm

You bitch!
39   WookieMan   2018 Apr 4, 4:34pm

Capital Y seems to be a problem with the U filter. Just a guess.
40   WookieMan   2018 Apr 4, 4:34pm

Yup, Cap Y is a problem You ass wipe! ;)
41   WookieMan   2018 Apr 4, 4:54pm

You

This is another test. Please note the above was sarcasm.
43   Patrick   2018 Apr 4, 4:58pm

Thanks @WookieMan

I failed to consider capitalization.

Y-o-u is now also disallowed.

I know people can work around it, but I hope they won't. Just trying to pre-empt flame wars. If anyone has suggestions for alternate means of flame extinguishment, please say.
44   FortWayne   2018 Apr 4, 4:59pm

why remove that word? how can someone say "what do u think?" or some other use for that word?
45   WookieMan   2018 Apr 4, 5:00pm

Sorry @Patrick

Are U testing some things? I had "U" in a some comments that I tried to post and it didn't work. Got a prompt not to talk about other users. U is a tough word to not allow even though I get the logic behind the move. "U" in many cases can be used in the group sense and not directed at an individual. No problem with giving it a shot, just might be a bit more difficult to write certain things. There's also the fact I just used the letter u to get the comment through.

Not trying to break the system out of the gate, but I think u can see how it may not work.
46   WookieMan   2018 Apr 4, 5:08pm

Y-o-u-r doesn't post either FYI @Patrick
47   FortWayne   2018 Apr 4, 5:13pm

Much agreed.

Yes, I'm trying an experiment to see if I can raise consciousness of how often we refer to a person rather than the person's argument.

I know it's a bit annoying, but let's try it for a while. Thank U!

Right on! If we stopped trying things we'd still all be living in caves.

Yes, by design.

There might also be other words I had not considered that contain the forbidden string.
51   WookieMan   2018 Apr 4, 5:17pm

ending the forbidden word with an R and self doesn't work either. Though that may follow the same logic in banning now that I think about it.
52   FortWayne   2018 Apr 4, 5:19pm

This u thing is kind of annoying.
53   Patrick   2018 Apr 4, 5:40pm

You're right, it's just too annoying.

Reverted.

Other suggestions for stopping personal attacks and sticking to arguments?
54   FortWayne   2018 Apr 4, 5:44pm

I don’t think there is anything other than encouragement. It’s human nature.

I know I had one post deleted, that made me think about it more carefully.

55   WookieMan   2018 Apr 4, 5:59pm

Not sure you can "stop" personal attacks on the internet. Idiots on Facebook will comment in their own name with outrageous comments. Throw the anonymity that we have here and it's probably impossible if people are willing to post dumb ass shit with their actual name on it on FB.

I wish there was a way, as 99% of people here very likely wouldn't behave the way they do if they met each other at a bar sitting at the airport waiting for a flight. This includes some of the biggest head butters here. They'd all be cordial to each other in real life if they didn't know that they met their Patnet nemesis.

Unfortunately anonymity breeds ass holes in some people. The written word also breeds ass holes. Really think about the written word and how long people have used it or have been able to understand it. I know boomers, including a family member at that age, that literally can't read. Born in the fucking 1950's.

Reading has been a privilege for a long time. So has writing and now typing. The lowest common denominator has been brought up to what was once a privileged class if you think about it. With that change, intellectual conversation has been brought down to it's lowest levels. This is where we stand. Not sure you're going to prevent the personal attacks unfortunately.

The problem is, that word can also be used asking a legitimate question of another poster.

"Can "y*u" give me a stock tip?"

"Where did "y*u" go on vacation?"

"Will "y*u" provide a link to that data"?

"What type of car do "y*u" drive"?

There are many instances where it has a legitimate use. Yo*'re just being too anal about it.

No.

Florida, last week.

Sniper says

I'm not a link guy. Don't believe what you read/see on the internet. Or books. Or anything really. We all come out a vagina and then die at some point. Links. Don't. Matter.

Sniper says
"What type of car do "y*u" drive"?

A POS right now. Fuck car payments though. Not real interested in dropping cash on a car right now either. Point A to B is all that matters really and it does that. Wifey gets the nice car, bitch.

Are you? Kidding, aside you can post the word you again FYI.

And I do know they weren't supposed to be answered. Though the answers were real. Take it for what it's worth. The beach in FL was great. Got some sun and some relaxation, BAM! And my car still does suck.

@Patrick - One thing I've noticed about the moderation is the sequence of posts as they get "put" back into the thread. I quoted this comment in my own comment above, but at some point it got put in the moderation "bin" or whatever we want to call it. I then approved it. The comment is now lower on the comments, even though it was posted earlier and quoted by me.

Is it possible to have the comments in moderation, go back to where they were originally? I feel like it causes confusion in the flow of the comments.

Let's not keep reposting personal comments please. Doesn't matter if it's a joke.

BTW, it was a quote I reposted from comment 35 above.

This is true. I did post what was quoted. I approved Snipers comments as it appears some got marked personal. Don't agree with him on certain things, but nothing nefarious happened here. Not real sure why the particular comments got tagged/pegged/marked personal.

I'm extremely liberal when it comes to moderation here. I think many here are better off blowing off steam here with words instead of doing it in the real world. That said, I can handle my own. I'd honestly prefer if people don't mark comments directed towards me as personal even if they appear to be actually personal or even sarcasm. Outside of a direct physical threat, anything directed towards me directly is free game.

So are personal comments allowed as long as they are quotes? Rules are rules or do we get to apply them differently when we want to?

I hear you. I took the comment as sarcasm and I'm pretty sure that's what it was. It was directed to/at me, and I didn't take offense to it. Patrick is the boss, but I made my own decision and allowed the comment through as it seemed harmless.

@WookieMan yes, good point.

OK, wish granted, comments in moderation will not have their timestamp changed when they are approved.

@RafiMaas thanks for noting these personal comments. No, quoting them is not allowed either.

Deleting them now.

Please attack points and not people. I know it's not human nature and requires some discipline in thought and writing, but it can be done.

So, quoting someone's previous comments is consider a personal attack now??

Hard to keep up with the never ending changing rules based on the direction of the wind.

Probably easier just to put the goalposts on wheels, much easier to keep moving.

BTW, there a whole ton of quotes that need to be deleted in all the new threads today.

69   CBOEtrader   2018 Apr 6, 9:21am

@patrick i think i may take you up soon on starting that crypto forum.

I have some colleagues in PR and a few other crypto professionals who will all be admins and/or official authors for the forum.

Recently had a few investor groups (one in silicon valley and one in mexico city) become interested in a little stock trading game i built https://www.facebook.com/AlphadogFastTrading/videos/353408711763254 and want to turn it into a crypto training and education tool.

I will add in term structure and vol surface analysis of exchange traded bitcoin products, while my colleagues will discuss wallets, trading, legal environment etc...

You want to do this w us?
70   Patrick   2018 Apr 6, 9:23am

@CBOEtrader yes, absolutely. Let's do it.

Send me an email at p@patrick.net

Quoting anything other than a personal attack is fine. If a comment is a personal attack, please use the "personal" link to mark it so, or just email patrick about it.

The goal posts never changed. The goal is productive commentary and argument, with the elimination of all personal attacks.
