No there aren't any reasons for the president to directly interact with the FBI. The FBI is under the AG. If the president has a question he should ask the AG. Then there is no question of propriety. Trump did fire Comey, and went on national TV saying it was because he wouldn't drop the Russian investigations into Flynn. Further, from Comey's testimony, Trump looks like he was trying to coerce Comey to drop the investigation beforehand.

The President has the authority to do a lot of things, but the intent and purpose of doing those things determines legality or not.
