Nay. The bacteria/virus theory wasn't yet invented. They called malaria "bad air" because it was connected with humid places like swamps, rather than mosquitos. They even recognized that windy places were "healthier" for this reason.

If some bachelor died of smallpox in 1800 or 1850 and his goods were auctioned off, nobody would think twice about bidding on his blanket to cover themselves or their children with.

There WAS the idea of using a needle and thread to pass blood between survivors of Smallpox and healthy people, but the origin of that was "Hair of the dog that bit me", and was regarded as a crank theory for a long time. After all, everybody knows disease is based on the 4 humours.
