Borderline personality disorder is neither common nor uncommon but once you see it and recognize, you can usually take the person with a grain of salt, although you can't always stop the trouble they cause.

Borderlines more or less methodically cause difficulties to everybody around them. They invent delusions based on their ever changing and volatile emotions and spread them like they are reality. Glenn Close in the movie "Fatal Attraction" played a pretty convincing role of an extreme borderline personality. Princess Diana was reputedly a "waif" type borderline personality, seeming to need people to take care of her then causing furors. She probably drove Charles bonkers.

They can appear normal, even innocent and helpless, at times, and charming, and then just go off the reservation.

They spread false rumors and pit people against each other, mostly to draw attention to themselves. They cause train wrecks, and then sit back and act like they had nothing to do with it.

Unfortunately, they can find alliances with co-dependants who believe their delusions.

They also are extremely resistant to any kind of psychologic treatment unless highly motivated.

The usual advice is that if you suspect somebody is borderline, relative or not, run, don't walk, away from them. You can't help them and their chance of getting help and getting better tends to be zilch.

If you MUST deal with them, you need to establish extremely strong boundaries and rules, which usually wind up having you walk away, anyway.

Otherwise, they will completely drive you crazy, too, and make you chronically miserable with their phlegmatic demands and histrionic, embarrassing fits around provocative events not based on any perceivable reality.

They are typically always causing trouble, starting rumors, pitting people against each other etc.

I'd venture to suggest that Rin has more of a problem with his sister than turtledove, who was after all merely expressing her opinion on family. People who have no real knowledge and experience with sociopaths can't really comprehend the sheer destruction on which they are capable, or the unrelenting horror that is life alongside such a person. Don't put your sister's condition on turtledove, or blame her for not understanding.
Those of us who know about sociopaths understand. Ceffer described the personality rather well. It's a person who, having no discernible conscience, gets their jollies from making other people miserable. They can do absolutely anything they think they could get away with. Simply put, they're the most toxic people you could ever hope to know, and having one in your family means you usually can't ever be rid of them. It's a curse akin to cancer, though perhaps cancer is kinder because eventually you die and are rid of it. People are people. There are good women, bad men and vice-versa. There are bad priests and all sorts of other combinations.

The laws is what makes things skewed. In the west, women are considered to be the equivalent of Mother Theresa and men the equivalent of Hitler. Even if a woman kills a man and her own children-somehow , somewhere some man must have done something to her -else no way a woman can do such hideous deeds. That unbalances women who now have no concept of right and wrong. Spread your legs to multiple men-the gubmtn now considers you a victim and will support you for being the most noblest of all critters-a single mom.
