Only in this dystopian "new normal” world would the bad news that Microsoft plans to fire 18,000 employees be considered good news. But, apparently for Microsoft stock holders that was precisely the case. Microsoft stock (MSFT) surged to a new high on the announcement this week.

I want to invest in where the 18,000 is going.
American corporations have a great track record of expelling all of their top talent in order to make the shareholders money.

Those companies are sometimes sunk on the innovations and products that those people created elsewhere.

Just look at all of the hottest start up tech companies in the last decade. All of their top talent were ex-employees of some other tech giant.

You see what it did for Circuit City.

Nokia's patent portfolio was worth $7B, easily.

They were THE industry innovator in initial stages states of the cellular phone revolution, 1994-2006

hell, I even got a Nokia phone in 2000 . . .

The people now there are mostly disposable, obviously.

Keep the A players who can find a home, jettison the rest.

Until recently, they were still a top innovator, just not in top-of-the-line phones. They still kicked some ass for a while in third world countries for people who need a basic phone. They figured out how to deal with inconsistent electricity, inconsistent service, rough conditions, etc. Their devices for third world countries are high quality for the feature set and don't break, and they built a name for themselves in this area, but even that is starting to fade now due to competition.
