In 2013, Iraq faced its deadliest year since 2008. According to the United Nations, over 7,800 Iraqi civilians were killed in sectarian violence last year. Another 1,000 Iraqis serving as security forces died, bringing the total death count to nearly 9,000. Much of this violence is leftover from the American-led war that ended in 2011.
