Actually, it's easier to just get knocked out and accept the damage on your own than to retaliate, and be dragged through the media as a vigilante and raped by lawyers and the press for years on end.

At least, getting knocked out has a rather quick beginning, middle and end and won't ruin your life as long as there is heal-able damage.

Such is our society that self defense becomes nothing more than a media and lawyer platform to ruin somebody's life while exonerating and sympathizing with the perps, that's the best way for them to make publicity and money.
