Op/Ed piece in Forbes. Looks like all the horrible things the pundits said would happen when Obamacare kicks in may not come to pass after all. Here are some excerpts - read the whole piece:

For quite some time, I have been predicting that Obamacare would likely mean higher insurance rates in the individual market for the “young immortals” and others under the age of 40. At the same time, my expectation was that those who fall into the older age ranges would benefit greatly as their premium charges would be lowered thanks to the Affordable Care Act.

It is increasingly clear that I had it wrong.

Upon reviewing the data, I was indeed shocked by the proposed premium rates—but not in the way you might expect. The jolt that I was experiencing was not the result of the predicted out-of-control premium costs but the shock of rates far lower than what I expected—even at the lowest end of the age scale.

Setting aside the never-ending nonsense peddled by the opponents of healthcare reform, everyone from the Congressional Budget Office to numerous private actuaries have warned that premium shock could be expected to set in once the public began to see the reality of what Obamacare would mean to their pocketbooks. And yet, the only real jolt to the system being felt by these public and private prognosticators today is utter amazement over just how reasonable the California prices have turned out to be.

How did the CBO and the actuaries get it so wrong?

For all the negative chatter about how including older and sicker Americans in the health insurance pools would drive up the price for younger participants in the pool less likely to be ill, what we are now seeing in states like California is that the desire on the part of the health insurance companies to increase market share—thanks to the large influx of customers as a result of Obamacare—is driving prices downward.

That is precisely what the President said would happen.

Sarah Kliff at The Washington Post reveals just far off the prognosticators have been.

“The Congressional Budget Office predicted back in November 2009 that a medium-cost plan on the health exchange – known as a “silver plan” – would have an annual premium of $5,200. A separate report from actuarial firm Milliman projected that, in California, the average silver plan would have a $450 monthly premium.”

The actual costs?

Kliff continues, “On average, the most affordable “silver plan” – which covers 70 percent of the average subscriber’s medical costs – comes with a $276 monthly premium. For the 2.6 million Californians who will receive federal subsidies, the price is a good deal less expensive…”

As you can see, the actuaries missed by a huge percentage.

This part is for Captain Shuddup:

If you are among the many Americans who have bought into the fear and loathing that has been the campaign against Obamacare, you just might wish to reconsider. With every passing day, the various myths, legends and lies put forward by those with a political axe to grind, TV or radio rating to be raised or vote to be purchased, are falling victim to the facts.

Of course, if you continue to find it more useful to hate the Affordable Care Act than to recognize the benefit of what this program offers to you and your family, nothing I can say is likely to change your mind.

Is this like when Obama got a Nobel peace prize for things he didn't do yet? I'll be wrong, when I'm paying about $150 a month for a family of four, and there are no copays. That's my idea of "Affordable Healthcare".

All of the costs are hidden now in out of pocket expenses, and not one single Love letter to ACA written to date, even begins to address the co payments, coins, and deductibles. It used to just be one it was called a deductible. But now they've found three whole new ways to make you pay 3 times for the same doctor's visit, on top of that "Premium" that the Liberal machine keeps everyone focused on. "Pay no attention to the details, most of you will get subsidized "Premiums"!"

2014 is long way away, it's only going to be longer, if you insist on trying to get me to agree with your unreferenced declarations.

2014, that will separate the Democrats from those that were lied to, not your articles from the ministry of propaganda.

Great, I'm glad you decided to be reasonable about this. LOL.

Don't stop there. Perhaps you would like a chauffeur-driven limousine to take you to the doctor, and some original Louie XIV furnishings in the waiting room. Maybe the nurses can toss rose petals at your feet as you walk in. And I think $150/month for a family of four is too much; they should pay YOU for the privilege of having you as a patient.

Homefool, you copied and pasted part of an opinion piece, pretending to invite people to read the rest of it, but you omitted any link and you don't even credit the author. Here is a link.

Forbes attributes the opinion piece to Richard Ungar, who states at the top of the page that he writes "from the left on politics and policy." His opinion expressly does not reflect the views of Forbes, contrary to Homefool's implication above. Instead, Ungar relies on a blog on The Washington Post, which supported Obamacare. Homefool fails to distinguish between fact and opinion, and fails even to keep track of whose opinion it is. Homefool passes off a personal opinion originally presented expressly as an opinion "from the left," as if it were fact and without attribution, apparently because it says what he wants it to say.

BTW, the fact that Ungar claims to write "from the left" only shows how the electoral deck has been re-shuffled and the Democratic party has turned against itself with this legislation. Previously, "the left" opposed Obamacare. That includes then-Senator Obama, who campaigned against it when it was called Hillary's Plan. Homefool doesn't care about that because he wants his subsidized pills so badly. Other people remember Obama's arguments against it, when evaluating what Obama eventually signed. IIRC, Obama opposed mandatory private insurance at a time when Forbes seemed to support it; tribal Democrats cite Forbes' shift as evidence of insincerity on the part of Republicans, without considering the implications of Obama's reversal with regard to his own sincerity. Forbes' motto is "The Capitalist Tool," and the site has gushed over increased profits for PhRMA with Obamacare, although the legislation is more accurately described as lemon socialism. Homefool's addiction to toxic disproved pills has put him in the awkward position of supporting a policy that Obama opposed and that even Forbes no longer supports, so Homefool tries to fool others with this unattributed opinion piece.

so Homefool tries to fool others with this unattributed opinion piece.

The first thing he says is it's an op/ed piece. Op/ed stands for opinion/editorial. WTF don't you understand about that. Coming from someone who posts opinion articles as fact all the time that's a very funny accusation.

Op/ed stands for opinion/editorial.

No, op/ed stands for "opposite editorial", i.e. opposite the editorial page. Bob's error and Homefool's post suggest neither of them understands the difference between fact and opinion.

bob2356 says

As for Bob's false accusation, anyone who looks at my comments can see that he's wrong yet again, which happens often despite his inability ever to admit it. Bob's memory is so addled by Rx narcotics that he can't keep track of who said what. Long experience of Bob's sarcastic ingratitude has taught me to stop wasting time trying nicely to point him in the right direction, though a toxoplasmosis test might persuade him to get treatment or to give up driving.

Bob, this will be a good test for you: can you admit that you were wrong about what op/ed stands for? Can you admit any of the examples where I've corrected your errors for you, taking the time to provide clear proof, even where I went out of my way to be nice to you? Or are you merely a toxoplasmotic jerk ignoring facts and trolling for hopeless fights?

Fools choose ignorance, and thus remain fools no matter how old they get. Their situation worsens when they choose to become addicts, compounding their pre-existing condition. Addicts find enablers who validate their feelings, thus continuing the cycle. Bob and Homefool disagree about Obamacare, but at least they have each other.

Ok it stands for opposite the editorial page. As in OPINION opposite the editorial page. It's still opinion, which apparently everyone understands except you.

As for the rest of your bullshit, I really don't give a rats ass. Coming from someone who can't remember taking the MCATS (or at least claiming they took the MCATS) I'm not worried about my ability to keep track.

Actually, I'm the one who pointed out that it was an opinion piece, and I even tracked down the source. Just look above your comment, on this very page, if you can control your emotions long enough. That was the comment that seemed to set off your latest episode, despite the fact that it didn't even mention you.

bob2356 says

can't remember taking the MCATS (or at least claiming they took the MCATS)....

Only you ever claimed that, and at first it was only your faulty memory, but at this point it's merely a lie on your part. I don't usually call people liars, but since you fail ever to provide a link, and last time you quoted someone else, your persistence makes it obvious. What do you hope to accomplish by repeating the same lie over and over again? Are you hoping that your lie might eventually upset me? It only makes me suspect that your brain has demented so badly that you can't even think of a new lie, you have to keep repeating the same one.

bob2356 says

bullshit

In your vocabulary, that word seems to mean 'anything that upsets you, regardless of accuracy.' You retaliate, in your imaginary fight club, with whatever you can think of that might upset me - again regardless of accuracy. It's a bit sad really, like watching a washed up, punch-drunk boxer trying to throw a left hook, so feeble that it looks like slow motion. Your toxoplasmosis keeps you trolling for fights that your dementia guarantees you'll lose.

Bob, I wouldn't bother arguing with curious2. He's like a child who misbehaves in order to get attention. Sometimes it's better to ignore the behavior, because if you respond to it, you are only validating it. The best we can hope for is that he'll wear himself out and eventually go away.

Yet you persist in responding, while pretending to ignore. It's like a child saying, "I'm ignoring you." What is that supposed to accomplish, other than giving you and Bob an opportunity to reinforce your co-dependence? The irony is, since you both share the same need to fight endlessly, you'd be much happier fighting each other. But, since I challenged the Obamacare that your addictive pills depend on, you and Bob link up like Shia and Sunni joining forces against the Americans.
