Democrats across the U.S. are bunched in big metropolitan areas, resulting in the partys House candidates often winning by wide margins on Election Day while Republicans capture more seats because their voters are spread out. Its a prime reason Democrats fell 17 seats short of winning a House majority in 2012, even as their congressional candidates drew about 1.

Well duh!

The word gerrymander (originally written Gerry-mander) was used for the first time in the Boston Gazette on March 26, 1812. The word was created in reaction to a redrawing of Massachusetts state senate election districts under the then-governor Elbridge Gerry (pronounced /ˈɡɛri/; 1744–1814). In 1812, Governor Gerry signed a bill that redistricted Massachusetts to benefit his Democratic-Republican Party.

In 1812... Democratic-Republican Party.

So basically nothing's changed in a hundred years?

Yes, but Republicans are much better at it.

The solution is to remove Congressional districts all together and go with proportional representation.

Payback is a bitch for the D's, but gerrymandering, like geofencing (which put 1K plus American citizens in the DC gulag for years), is the darkest side of GPS technology.

Why can't it be used for good? Because globohomo won't allow it and therefore not only will not fund it but nip any promising beneficial applications of GPS in the bud, unless it can be licensed to big agro as a monopoly.
