"Customers flocked in to early store openings on Thanksgiving day to scoop up "doorbuster" deals. A record 247 million shoppers visited stores and websites in the post-Thanksgiving Black Friday weekend this year, up 9% from 226 million last year, according to a survey by the National Retail Federation released Sunday.

Individual shoppers also shelled out more money -- spending $423 this weekend, up from $398 last year. Total spending over the four-day weekend reached a record $59.1 billion, a 13% increase from $52.4 billion last year, according to the NRF."

Did anyone get trampled to death this year? GOD I hope not.

I spent the day in my father's machine shop building some custom car parts for fun. And eating left overs. And eating, and eating.....

There have been reported fights and fatalities, though with so many people I don't know how it compares to other venues, for example baseball games have also become an occasion for violence and vandalism. To me the more troubling issue is that spending has achieved new records while income and jobs have not, i.e. it's deficit spending driving production in China. It reminds me of Warren Buffett's famous story of Thriftville and Squanderville:

Conspicuous debt-financed spending in America, including as another PatNet user put it American wage slaves fighting over products made by slave labor in other countries, seems unhealthy all around.

My current project. Well, one of a few.

It's all done on a manual mill and lathe, so designs generally stay relatively simple. We should have our home aluminum smelter up & running in a few weeks, so we'll be able to cast things then too!
