Spoke with my sister who lives in western Michigan yesterday, told her to be careful. This is completely fucked:

Basically, parts of Ohio will now be as healthy as some superfund sites....

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you. Are you saying no big deal?

I am saying it is a huge deal, worse than any other chemical spill in last 30 or so years that I am aware of. It will be living on land contaminated by dioxins which are really persistent and difficult to clean up. Oil is eaten up by bacteria so it does not persist and it is not that toxic. A lot of other stuff decomposes by time. This crap made when vinyl chloride burns does not. All I can wish to people in affected areas is to run away as fast as possible.

I just wanted to point out this is true. When I was a little kid 45 years ago, I remember when it was claimed that plastic cups would not decompose for 1,000 years or so. I remember feeling bad about that, thinking the world would fill up with garbage.

It was bullshit. A plastic bottle left outside in 1980 might still exist as a bottle cap, and a few flecks of plastic, the rest has been completely decomposed.

All those styrofoam containers for Big Macs, they may exist in landfills, but if they were dumped as littler along a highway, the are entirely returned to the environment, their atoms in the soil or in living animals and plants. Still, probably better we moved to paper/cardboard.

I grew up in an area that was so desperately remote, I have run across PERSONAL dumps, where, 50 years prior, my grandparent's parents, discarded old buckets, machines, etc. You can still see them, sort of of. Parts of very rusted bicycles exist, I found a car door recently with the window intact, part of a bucket. Landfills preserve garbage, but much smaller dumping grounds do not. When I was a kid, there was a sort of local famous site where a car crash had happened, where the car was left behind to rust and rot. That car is entirely gone today, 40 years later. I don't think I could even find the location today where it used to be.

Nature is the great recycler.

This is a catastrophe of monumental proportions ...

"Government released"? Was that a government-owned train on a government-owned railroad?

Ban trains. Done. Any more problems need solving?

It was the government that decided to burn the chemical to "prevent an explosion."

Why would they cover this up?

Kind of fucks up their narrative they just spent the last two years building, that only the government can keep you healthy.

It's called Amtrak, government owned for decades now.
44   NuttBoxer   2023 Feb 14, 10:35am

Not sure if anyone remembers the threatened rail strike. They changed their systems a while back and totally fucked things up. Workers are on insane schedules now, that probably leave them more than a bit sleepy. Centralization at it's finest.

Amtrak is a passenger service. How is it related to this particular covfefe?

Yep, I remember this with the Deepwater Horizon spill.

"Much of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill has disappeared because of bacteria. Oil-eating microbes have consumed a considerable portion of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Chemicals used to disperse the oil kept it underwater, making it more available to the microbes that live in the deeper portions of the ocean." - CNBC

“What EPA claims is the "safe" lifetime dose of dioxin — now raining down over Ohio and PA — is he weight of 1/32,000,000th (one thirty-two millionth) of an aspirin tablet.”

@DC_Draino
Is this really happening?

Netflix released a movie in 2022 called “White Noise” about a train crash in a sleepy Ohio town and how a chemical explosion forced people to evacuate

I’m not kidding

What the hell

It is not, appears Norfolk Southern is private. Reading through their Wikipedia page, I noticed it's not their first environmental disaster, and they were definitely part of that shitty scheduling system that's led to labor disputes.

I kind of heard about this White Noise movies shot for Netflix in 2021. Watched a more detailed breakdown of the Ohio situation last night, the movie takes place in Eastern Palestine, and even had extras in it from the town who are now living their roles in real life.

Also, saw this morning that most of Ohio is privately owned farmland. The odds of that movie covering the same scenario two years earlier in the same podunk town are astronomical. This was no accident. Just like the food facilities burning down...

BTW, in case you've forgotten, state governments have been hording food stores since 2020. I hope you're all prepared for what's coming.

EAST PALESTINE, OH — Government officials are warning residents of East Palestine to protect themselves from deadly health risks by making sure they've received the latest COVID booster.

"In light of the ongoing environmental and health crisis in rural Ohio, we are urging all citizens to make sure they are up to date on their vaccinations," said Ohio Health Department spokesperson Danze Pickleton. "The chemicals being spilled into the water and burned into the air are nothing compared to the deadly power of the latest variant XBB.1.5. Get your booster, East Palestinians!"

The Ohio DOH reiterated that it's essential to get vaccinated, especially if you are traveling to a new place after losing your home to a deadly chemical spill and are being forced to leave under threat of arrest.

"If there's one thing we care about here in government it's your health. Please get vaccinated," said Pickleton.

At publishing time, the Department of Transportation had recommended preventing future chemical spills by making everyone turn in their guns.

‘Bomb Train’ in Ohio Sickens Residents After Railroad Cutbacks, Corporate Greed Led to Toxic Disaster

From the article:

Fears of a wider health and environmental disaster are growing, after a 150-car freight train operated by Norfolk Southern derailed and a so-called controlled burn released toxic chemicals last week in East Palestine, Ohio.

Residents reported seeing a fireball and mushroom cloud of smoke fill the skyline. Data released by the Environmental Protection Agency shows the TRAIN CONTAINED MORE TGOXIC AND CARCINOGENIC CHEMICALS THAT INITIALLY REPORTED, including phosgene, a poisonous gas that has been used as a CHEMICAL WEAPON OF WAR.

Officials LIFTED AN EVACUATION ORDER for residents last Wednesday, SAYING THE AIR AND WATER WERE SAFE, but residents have reported sore throats, burning eyes and respiratory problems, and wildlife has been found dead.

99.99% of US railroad tracks are in private hands. Amtrak owns a part of Northeast Corridor and that's it.

AUM != ownership.

And if your money are in some Vanguard funds you own that railroad too.
