Batteries are fine for powering non-reactive loads, AKA resistive loads. Any powerful motors create a tremendous power draw when first spinning up. Once they're up to speed, the current draw decreases, then when they stop, they induce inverse massive EMF current. This is very damaging to battery-based systems. Most large motors use three phase power, which is better able to balance the reactive loads.
