CNN CEO Chris Licht had to speak to employees during a tense company town hall on Tuesday as the network faces layoffs by early December after he was tasked with finding ways to cut costs.

Licht, 51, addressed questions surrounding the cuts after he previously indicated during the summer that CNN would not face any need to fire staff.

t the town hall, Licht was unapologetic about his earlier indication that there wouldn’t be layoffs, but added that he felt he was being honest at the time.

Licht has overseen the shutdown of CNN+ in 2022 and a purge of company veterans such as Brian Stelter, Jeffrey Toobin and John Harwood.

He reportedly did not get into specifics about the layoffs but said teams that are not deemed essential to the network’s ‘core mission’ were on the chopping block.

‘As it relates to CNN, there are no layoffs per se. A layoff is a downsizing, where you are given a target, and that is not happening at CNN,’ Licht said at a staff-wide event in June.

Then, in October, he wrote a memo that stated ‘changes’ that affect ‘people, budgets and projects’ were coming and said there will be a ‘noticeable change to this organization.’

‘There is widespread concern over the global economic outlook, and we must factor that risk into our long-term planning. All this together will mean noticeable change to this organization. That, by definition, is unsettling. These changes will not be easy because they will affect people, budgets, and projects,’ he said.

Licht said during the meeting that there are no plans for future layoffs beyond those in early December ‘at this time.’

According to Puck, Licht has been tasked by his boss David Zaslav to trim $100 million from CNN’s budget to appease Warner Bros’ Discovery.

A CNN staffer during the meeting said they had been with the company for 20 years and had never seen morale lower than it was right now.

Warner Bros. Discovery is also laying off 1,000 of its 40,000 workers before the year ends.

CNN is not the only network suffering because of harsh economic circumstances that have seen inflation and interest rates soar.

Legit question, does anyone even watch TV anymore? We have it on in the background in the morning at home for news/weather with local affiliates, not national bullshit. Specifically WGN which is Chicago and not like NBC, CBS, etc that go to their national morning show. I think cable is well on it's way to dying like the newspaper.

National cable networks will still exist, but there are you tubers with higher ratings than stations like CNN. People want the content they want to see and stream it. Or interact with content in a forum like this or unfortunately Twitter or FB.

I watched cable for a few years at a Florida condo because it was included in the condo fee.
The channel I watched was TCM=Turner Classic Movies

Otherwise I don't watch TV. Since 2018, I have just been back on my Roku and sometimes an antenna to pick up MeTV and other stuff.
I can't stand watching the talking heads, although sometimes Fox was tolerable with Hannity and Tucker.

Funny Roku has all kinds of Discovery channel shit on it, a lot of true crime, psycho killer murders of females, etc.
My friend is hooked on "Discovery Investigation" which is all crime and murder all the time.

Well, there is a big screen in practically every house. I suspect this recession will have more people re-discovering over the air antenna TV. Even so, the Roku and streaming stuff is just more channels, watching "Yellowstone" is still watching TV, even if it is not on a traditional broadcast network.

That tactic is quite common among employers. The claim of "no layoffs" is to stop employees from pro-actively finding other jobs and quitting before the boss is ready to let them go.

If the news had a laugh track, I might tune in, occassionally. But no, no TV for me. The local DC and Baltimore stations are affirmative action freak shows.

CNN gets fees from cable access deals that are over 20 years old. That is the only reason they are still in biz.

Once those deals expire, so does CNN.

I think television is dead, period. My 60 year old sister and husband only stream, they stopped having cable television years ago. I think for my generation (X) it is already mostly dead, and among Y and younger, it's certainly dead.
