Stalin was an idiot, he did not see the value in having his officers and soldiers if overrun, to retreat and regroup to fight another day.
If anyone took it upon themselves to do so were quickly executed.
If officers called for reinforcements, the best they would get would be the least trained people they could muster.
Had Stalin concentrated his whole Army on taking on the Germans region by Region. He would have wiped them all out in short order. But by fighting on so many fronts, he diluted his Army and those towns fell anyway as did the people who lived there. If the Nazis weren't killing everyone, the Russian people were killing themselves. They were just as crazy as the Nazis. All it took was just one person in a village to call someone a fascist or German sympathizer then the whole damn village would string that person up and kill them, or report them to local communist authorities who would kill them.
I don't know what Eric Holder is going on about. The guy hates commies, and lamented that most people in Russia were not with the Communist shit either. That's why so many were murdered by those psychos long before the German forces ever got there. His point was, which I agree. Had Hitler been a Liberator, there were way more people in Russia that would have switched sides and helped them kill the Bolsheviks, Soviets and Commies.
Here's the thing with those Russian movies, the Communists were so proud of themselves. They pretty much told those stories as is, sure there was much Propaganda wrapped in it, which was easy to wade through and ignore. The when they would try to portray the comradery of Party and how endeared it was by everyone. But then they show how it was enforced through brainwashing and local commissars making sure everyone is towing the party line, lest you meet a horrible end. Those commies were quite proud of their actions, they didn't sugar coat anything in a way, that anyone that is not a commie, would say. "They were good boys, they dindu nuffin!"

Today I did work for a Russian couple they are over 60, and I got to talking about the Russian German WWII flicks I binge watched over the weekend. They agreed were all good titles. I asked the Gentleman just how true was the depiction of the Germans wiping out whole villages locking them in barns and torching them. He said very true. He said Hitler's problem as well as the Nazis themselves. They really did view themselves as a master race, and everyone else was subhuman. He also said those Soviet produced war movies makes it seem like Russia didn't have millions of men on the battle lines, and the Germans had far more tanks and were far more superior than what Russia had, he said that wasn't true at all. Stalin was a psychopath just as bat shit crazy as Hitler. Stalin didn't' sign the Geneva convention, so that was one of the reason Germany got away with their war atrocities and the what they did.
He also said not everyone in Russia was a Communist or Soviet, they were rooted out of their homes and family farms and made to work collective farms. Then shuttled off to the battle front without any training and put in front of the Germans. That is why the Germans took out so much of the Russian equipment and soldiers so early on in the war.
He said had Hitler came as a Liberator and not as the messenger of death, that killed everyone they ran into in the countryside. Hitler would have won the war in less than a year. But he was not a liberator, and his only goal was to erase the Russian people from the continent.
Stalin was such a psycho his own son got captured by the Germans, and Hitler offered him a trade his son for a Marshall, Stalin said he would not trade a Marshall for a Captain, even it was his own son.
But folks don't fall for this Hitler and Nazi shit, it's just propaganda, by Commies that knows them better than anyone else and are just as bad if not worse.
