None. Came from east Europe/asia and spent everything they had on the multiple boat trips. Then came from NY across Central America and to another boat that stopped in Mexico where some got off and stayed and then into San Pedro, where my great grandparents where told to follow the LA River about 20 miles to downtown LA where there was a small community of the culture they came from. Someone took them in until they had jobs.
The other side of the family was escaping extreme poverty and starvation. Again came here with absolutely nothing. My great grandfather spend a few weeks at Ellis Island. Not sure where they were first, but despite speaking no English, he learned a bit while at Ellis Island had blue collar technical skills. He had a job within two days of leaving Ellis Island.
