"Gates shares Piketty’s goal of spreading wealth, yet he doesn’t want to discourage the uber wealthy (like Gates) who are taking risks, investing in value-creating businesses, and helping the world through philanthropy.

Gates’ solution? Shift the American tax code from one that taxes labor to one that taxes consumption. Now, this sounds like standard, right-wing economic theory. Consumption taxes are usually favored by the wealthy and by conservative economists because they tend to be regressive in nature.

Since everyone—rich and poor—have to consume some amount of goods and services, and because the proportion of income spent is much higher for the poor than the rich, consumption taxes like state and local sales tax burden the poor more than the rich."

investing in value-creating businesses,

Ah the moral thought police picking winners and losers.

It would be great if the leaders when the debated budgets, and axing or creating programs or agencies. They did a full audit of the programs and services we already have. Work on how to make them more effective and efficient. Pull back on provisions, and add provisions where inefficiencies or deficiencies are found.

America if not most of the World would do better to work the fraud and out right abuses of the social nets already in place. Rather than just using those programs and services as a ruse to defend their policies . While acting like admitting to any fault what so ever in programs, is an admission of failure and defeat.

Why is trial and error the way every sector of society hones in best practices, but the Government just adds layers of shit on top of their mistakes and previous shit?

The world needs jobs, not wealth distribution wealth debates. Those Wealth debates are in lieu of any effective domestic, foreign and economic policy that would generate more employment.

Dare I say because of the inequality debate, it perpetuates income inequality?

I don't want the wealthy to give their money away. I want them to pay enough money that I can pay my bills with. And what money I have left over, I want to put in an interest baring account. Where it will accumulate until I have enough money to pursue my dreams. And create more employment for others, that are looking for the same.
