Do you make around $42,500 a year, pay taxes and obey the law? If you do, and work for a living in Massachusetts, then you are a SUCKER!

http://bostonherald.com/news_opinion/columnists/howie_carr/2013/08/carr_mass_earns_distinction_as_freeloaders_paradise

....Do you make $42,515 a year? Because that’s how much you need to earn, pre-taxes, to live the same lifestyle as a hypothetical local welfare family.
That’s the finding of the libertarian Cato Institute in a new study, and we’re No. 3 in the generosity of our largesse to the non-working classes. The only places ahead of us are Hawaii, which Obama refers to as “Asia,” and the District of Columbia, which isn’t a state.
So since Massachusetts is the only one in the contiguous 48, can we now chant in unison: “We’re No. 1! We’re No. 1!”

......Michael Tanner, the author of the Cato report, said yesterday: “If you tell people if they’re not married and they have a kid you’ll give them money, and if they don’t work, you’ll give them more money, guess what? They’ll have kids out of wedlock and not work. They’re not stupid.”
No, the stupid ones are the taxpayers. Tanner’s calculations are based not on the “individual” cited by the DTA, but on a family of a single mother and two kids, ages 1 and 4.

......They get $7,416 in cash (TANF, it’s called, and that’s the free money on the EBT cards). They collect $6,247 in food stamps, approximately $9,900 in Medicaid (Mass Health), another $979 in WIC (women and infant children), $450 in heating oil, $17,203 in public housing (Section 8) and finally, $300 in free cheese, milk and eggs.

Too bad Cato couldn’t assess other categories, because I think we’d also stand out in, say, number of EBT cards fraudulently issued per freeloader. Also, number of EBT cards issued to illegal aliens, and to dead people

Did Bap33 buy a trucking company, load up 18-wheelers and start daily runs relocating all the Illegal Welfare Queens to MA?

The amount spent on these "local welfare families" pales in comparison to the taxpayer-provided subsidies provided to these MA-based welfare queens:

Biogen Idec
Boston Scientific
EMC
Global Partners
Liberty Mutual Insurance Group
Mass. Mutual Life Ins.
Northeast Utilities
Raytheon
Staples
Thermo Fisher Scientific
TJX Companies

Finehoe,

Sooo, yet another example of deflecting the topic by basically saying "Well, there are worse problems, so why can't you ignore this one, and the idiots that caused this"...

But I'll take the bait. OK, so we got a state cutting deals to keep business in the state. A common occurence, right? And consider the 'quid' in the 'quid pro quo'.... The state doesn't charge some real estate taxes, or slightly to greatly reduced tax rates. But quess what? They get that all back and more when....
- The employees that live/work in that state pay state income tax. They pay an auto excise tax here in Mass. Since these employees live in the state, they'll get to pay all sorts of taxes that, otherwise wouldn't pay if the company didn't move out. Sales tax, booze/cigarette tax, real estate taxes on homes, and on and on and on.

I'll give you an example of what happens when the state says no. Companies like Fidelity say, "OK, you won't give us a little break, we are OUTTA HERE. My bro-in-law, makes over 250K a year at Fidelity in Boston, moved his family out of the state about a year ago, and now works in another state, along with all of the other Fidelity workers. The state now doesn't get corporate tax, income tax from the employees, and on and on and on. Believe me, the state gets more back by getting a company a deal on corporate or real estate taxes to do business...

Now let's talk about any benefits the state gets when it gives money from working tax payers to the lazy dead-beats. Hmmm. Let's see, they get 2-8 babies that will grow up in the welfare-mentality plantation, created by the proud liberals in my state. And dollars to donuts, they sure as shit won't have legit jobs, and paying taxes when they reach adult-hood. They will learn from Momma and the baby-daddy how to scam the state. The state is perpetuating and increasing a population that has no interest in working....

Finehoe, how about commenting on the Dept of Transistional assistance that runs on the 'honor system' when someone applies for welfare? You think this works? PFFT.

http://bostonherald.com/news_opinion/columnists/howie_carr/2013/08/carr_no_jail_time_in_161g_scheme_what_a_scam

So Mr. and Mrs. Hickey of Medford abscond with more than $161,000 in welfare benefits, and they’re going to do … no jail time? What exactly do you have to do in this benighted state to get thrown in the can for fraudulently using an EBT card, not to mention ripping off MassHealth and collecting SSI crazy checks? These scammers were prosecuted by Attorney General Marsha Coakley, who once said that “technically, it is not illegal to be illegal in Massachusetts.”I guess it’s also technically not illegal to illegally rip off the welfare system. Who was advising Marsha not to insist on at least a token jail sentence for the Hickeys? Marian Ryan? But don’t worry, the AG’s office told me last night the Hickeys have to make “full restitution” within the five years of their probation — wink wink nudge nudge.Meet today’s fraudsters — Ronald Hickey, age 44, and his bride, Stacie Coviello-Hickey, age 41. Sound like Americans to me, which means Marsha could have thrown them in jail with no angry PC repercussions, no hysterical ACLU appeals."

...."Apparently nobody at the Department of Transitional Assistance bothered to cross-check any documents they filed, because not only were they married, but Ronald was living with her and he was making $80,000 a year in a real job, one that wasn’t under the table.State Rep. Shaunna O’Connell (R-Taunton) explained the DTA’s weakness.“We work on the honor system,” she said. “Nobody ever checks. It’s cross my heart and hope to die.”

Not at all. More like "why expend resources on late library fines when murderers are on the loose."

Plenty of people get away with MURDER!

Phil Gramm, Bob Rubin, and that wizened gnome Greenspan fucked over the entire economy and haven't seen the inside of a courtroom either.

There are many wrongs and injustices I would like to see righted. However I don't usually rage at strangers as much as you about it. You should change your name to AngryBear.

Aside from that, being as I'm not in MA my care level is approximately zero. Write some angry letters to the editors of your local rags. Rally some thugs and start a movement. Or move to some other state. Do something more useful than send bits to strangers who at most find you a moment's puzzling distraction.

Funny that you mention murderers on the loose. It's more like liberal DAs and judges in Massachusetts are on the loose.....

Here is one sad example that happened days ago. Do you know Jerry Remy, famed Red Sox player and current color commentator for NESN? Well his son Jared has a rap sheet a mile long, beat the shit out of all his women, got everyone's attention this week when he killed his girlfriend, DAYS after getting arrested for beating her earlier. Apparently the DA and judge didn't deem it necessary to keep the asshole in jail. Same people appointing these idiots are the same people appointing 'decision-makers' at the DTA (dept of transitional assistance)... Ahhh liberal cronyism at its best...

Naaah. I'd rather address the problem and fix it, and make my state better. That would be the adult decision. I love MA, but know it can be SO MUCH BETTER....

Or in your case, why not Detroit? Or Stockton? Fine mess those towns are in after decades of democrats running those towns into the ground...

This is where i politely tell you to start a thread and knock yerself out. Because apparently do don't like news when liberals leaders actually do bad things, or apparently don't give a shit, or don't know how to fix a problem in my state. But I understand why you wouldn't touch this argument w/a 10 foot pole. You just spout about something off topic.. Nice try. Thanks for playing.

Ppl, in general, Massachusetts is not a tax friendly state for large corporations.

Normally, what happens is that when a breeder "development stage enterprise" grows out of Kendall Sq, it looks at offshoring or in-shoring in cheaper locales, than in growing a critical mass in Mass.

Thus, a lot of times, the state cuts a deal for a big biotech or a big corporate HQ, to suspend their prop tax requirements, in return for staying in the Bay State.

I'd say that this is akin to bribery, to keep the so-called Massachusetts Miracle alive, the idea that have universities like Harvard, MIT, Tufts, BU, etc, around is enough, to sustain a long term business environment.
