There used to be only two prevailing political philosophies,
Left and Right. The nuances that make up the splintered factions with in the party, never played into policy.
Now you have Republicans that act like classic Liberals, and Liberals that act like closet Republicans. The yin and yang and become the Ying. Ying can't seem to get a damn thing done, unless it negatively effects more than it benefits.
We're a government of the Ying by the Ying for the Ying.
Whatever happened to the adage that lots of folks, especially the Wall Street goons, love divided Government?
It seemed to come in two flavors--one, that compromise was a good thing and both sides would have to come together.
The second, more cynically, that it would prevent either side from getting their stuff done--gridlock. Seems to be relevant here, although I haven't heard a pundit peep about it one way or another.
