"Trust" is a very slippery word.
I think you'll have to define that a bit more.
Independents soak up a lot of things. It would probably be easier to measure, what memes or sound-bites they seem to repeat or agree with, and connect that back to it's media sources.

As an Independent I trust the Propaganda Scuttlebutt of the prospective party.
I trust getting information that galvanizes me into action against Liberals, by listening to NPR them selves. I rather shout "You're trying to do WHAT!?!?!" listening to them, than "They're doing WHAT!?!??" Watching Fox news.
Then when Bush was President, I watched FOX news to stay abreast of the bullshit that pissed me off about them.
I'm just better at reading between the lines when people are giving me a liars schpeil. My idea of a pure few moments of hell, is standing toe to toe listening to a Republican bitch about this administration. They are out raged over different Ironys than I am, for different reasons.

When politicians or media are starting some sort of campaigns with mantra of "helping someone or some group" I usually trust the opposition side more. Because I know how this society functions, if someone spends a ton of money and energy to try to sell something to the public that means public is about to get screwed and someone close to administration is going to make out like a bandit.
So far history has validated that view.

For instance, I'm really turned off by the NY Times/Boston Globe in general (not just politics). Reading the Globe out of college in the 90's, if I didn't read anything else, I'd believe that Real Estate only goes up, the only investment vehicles are mutual funds, all republicans are bad and can't be trusted.... The NY Times w/ failed Economic theory/thinking in Krugman, failed morality in Jason Blair.....In the same vein, as a fiscal conservative, I'm slowly moving away from the 'Rah-Rah' conservative voices (Think Rush > Hannity > Bill O'Reilly > Beck ...finally settling w/ 'reasoned voices' like Krauthammer, or a 'toned down' Michelle Malkin. I wish Fox could stock their shows w/ more people like Krauthammer. Instead we have O'Reilly yelling over everyone.... Maybe I'm not looking hard enough for my news consumption...

I don't know how to further convince you, that I am my own free critical thinker that would rather hear a persons intentions from their own perspective rather than the negative spin by the opposition.
Even if I am at odds with the news being reported by that pro demographic leaning news source.
Listening to Rush and Fox news bitch about the Liberals is like sitting at the bar with a bunch of dudes bitching about the idiosyncrasies of Women. It's counter productive and nobody is getting pussy.

Ha Trick Question, as anyone knows, a "True" independent, wouldn't know a good decision if it was crammed up their backside by Nancy Pelosi!

The problem is the word "news". If you're talking fox or the current NYT (I thought the NYT lost a lot after going online in the late 90's) then you are talking entertainment. As long as you accept that and look for news elsewhere then you will be fine.

I just thought of this recently, and figured I'd post this. I know this may be hard to discuss, as these two aren't within the same media segment (newspaper vs. TV, etc).
However, both are seen as the 'de facto' set of opinions for the left and the right. Both sides of the news consumer market detests the other's media darling of choice. I'm no different.
However, in trying to walk in someone else's shoes, so to speak, I'm openly wondering which news outlet would be trusted more by independents. I'm not trying to bash one or the other; Just curious.
