I wonder if they are because that gives them power as far as being the intelligentsia of the party.

There is also institutional sexism against men, and institutional religious discrimination against Christians. Many jobs and loan programs are reserved for women only. The FBI targets Christians for investigation.
And White people and Asians are systematically denied admissions and jobs purely on the basis of race.
This institutional racism makes misguided leftists feel better about themselves, and helps incompetent people get into medical school, endangering the public. It also makes visual classification of doctors by race an accurate reflection of probable competence. Because of "affirmative action", you now know for a fact that you should try to see an Asian or white doctor, and not a black or Hispanic one.
