Not a bad thought. When I was there last October, I couldn't how much further it had gone down hill in the 2 years since I'd last visited.

I don't think you can fix liberals, it's a mindset. And just like conservative people, they won't change their mind. Our best bet I think is to hope that enough people who want change, will come out and vote in change. Not easy in CA, politics and media propaganda here is a bubble. They filter everything here.

You're very right about that. Dissent from the party line is not tolerated, not matter how politely expressed or how well backed up with facts.

The computer game "Watchdogs2" has the hacker headquarters in one one the buildings around Dolores Park, that's how I recognize it. The "real world" Playstation game shows a fairly uncrowded SF, even though it riffs off the age of technology for it's theme. The game makes SF look relatively clean, manageable, and uncrowded, and a lot of recognizable locations are there. Of course, the game is hopelessly politically correct and preciously hip.

SF has been downhill so long, it doesn't know what up is, except for the Pacific Heights and elite areas. I remember years ago taking a course in SF , and when I went back home around 8PM, all the zombies were out around Market Street, it was damned eerie to drive past there.

San Francisco was once called Boston's sister city. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Boston has history, culture, and a sense of community. Sure, there are rough sections of town and yes, inner city crime exists (esp Dorchester, Roxbury, Mattapan) but it's not like SF, which looks a lot more like Philadelphia-by-the-bay, than Boston's sister city.

Boston's equivalent of Market St SF ... Bolyston St/Back Bay, was only soiled by the Marathon bombing whereas before it, it was practically crime free, with no vagabonds and thugs lurking in every corner.

Basically, if Boston had legal hoeing like up in Montreal, I'd give up the crepes and cafes and simply spend my weekends at home!

FYI, at most, when I'm in SF ... I'll have my driver shuttle me from my hotel to the UC/San Francisco Medical Center.

And that's about it. Really, I don't care for that place.

I only pray that it's hosted in Cherry Hill NJ or Montgomery CO PA. The difference between those 'burbs and the city side of Philly is like night and day.

I like this idea of a safe operating distance from that shithole.

Philly is a complete fucking disaster. I hate going to Conferences there, swarming with bums. Can't even cross to the Reading Market for lunch without getting accosted by panhandlers, and I have a pretty good resting asshole face.

The area around Temple University sucks balls too. Even around the Liberty Bell there's a ton of shitty characters.

The couple of times a few years ago I have been at LA airport, they just let the ghetto panhandlers go around and harass the passengers at the main terminal. Even if you did give them money, there would be another one a few minutes later.
I couldn't believe it, it was nothing like the LA airport I remember in the day. It was like a minor mugging every couple of minutes, and avoiding all eye contact. The main terminals were also just real dumps, the maintenance had gone down the tubes.
The last time I went LA airport in a stopover, fortunately no main terminal, I was just shuttled to a bunch of outlying terminals where the problem didn't exist that I could see.

A bit harsh but if you experience that kind of crap long enough everybody would eventually at least sympathize with that opinion. SF NEEDS to be cleaned up.

Maybe but if you haven't taken a stroll lately through downtown/soma SF I highly recommend to do so. There are much much more pressing problems and it's getting worse by the day. My last 20 minute stroll yielded one dude pants down pissing and shitting on the sidewalk, 2 strung out gals on the concrete helping each other through the trip, couple of skaters crashing against a store window and onto the streets causing pile ups while filming and one coked out guy screaming obscenities and becoming aggressive to passer bys.

Boston's touristy equivalent to Philly's Reading is Quincy Market (plus Faneuil Hall), nestled between Government Center, the Financial District, and the North End and it's quite possibly, one of the best looking urban open markets left in America for the visiting crowd.

And just a stone's throws away is Public Market, where you get the local New England farmer's stuff. That's where the locals hang out.

When I was a kid, I wouldn't venture into Maverick Sq in East Boston (a.k.a Eastie) but today, it's an amazing up and coming neighborhood with great vistas of the skyline.

In addition, the warehouse/seaport distinct of South Boston is now, a 2nd downtown center for office parks, etc. It's like Boston stepped into the 21st century whereas the rest of America fell into a black hole.

Seriously, I can't believe how cities like Philly, SF, Chicago, and others have failed so miserably.

Basically, once you leave 21st century Boston, you're better off simply visiting another country for touristy stuff than most other major cities in America. The only other USA-intercity reason for travel is business or seeing old friends/family. And no, college towns like Burlington VT don't count as cities.

Believe it or not, it used to suck even worse.

Only a dozen years ago, the moment you'd leave a Temple building (and the sun is down), you can expect to be accosted by a mugger, not a panhandler. Almost every single person who I'd known, who went to school in that crappy city (including Penn/Drexel/Jefferson), had at least one friend who was mugged just outside of a Temple building.

Today, the muggers are a block or two away. Call it a demilitarized zone.
