Yeah but I bet if you own one of every machine in those pictures above, they would still boot up.
These new thin light weight doodads today are dead after 3 years of solid use.
And actually, my first computer Globalyst AT&T 360 with a roadrunner full duplex telephony at a whopping 120mhz maxed out at 16 meg of ram.
Felt like real property when I got my first computer. It came with a users manual that after I read from front to cover(as instructed from the guy in the warehouse where I got did the tile job and bartered half cash, the other half paid in a computer) I was a full A+ bench tech at that same business three months later. Refurbishing surplus business systems terminals and clients. It also came with that big blue Windows 95 Bible, and a full DOS manual.
That kind of enthusiasm over a new computer, laptop, or smartphone, could never inspire that much learning with 90% of the material one needed to learn that much knowledge was all contained in the same box that hose devices came in. That would never happen today.
Back then you didn't just buy a computer, you bought Technology. It was a whole production, that required way more than a quick start getting started guide, that crap comes with today.
Back in the late 80's 386x systems cost around 3 grand and did very little, good software was non existent. Today I'm using win7 and it's horrible.
The biggest advance in technology has been internet speed and hardware. The operating systems are all junk.
How good is IBM's smartphone today?
You missed the point. The point isn't that IBM is a good company. It stopped being one when it outsourced all developers to Chindia.
The point is Apple is full of shit. It's a company that has never innovated or invented anything, yet claims to have invented everything. Oh, and the iPhone is shit. Android beats it hands down for the exact same reason the PC beat the MAC into nonexistence.

My dear naive friend. They ALL go to Chindia.
Which is why the IT major companies from 1980s suck today. In contrast, the good companies of today like Google and Amazon aren't.

google is; amazon is debatable

They all go to Chindia. Wether directly, or through a 10 person company that hires 10,000 in Chindia, or hiring H1B visas. Any profit seeking company willing to pay $100K for something that can be had for $20,000, will soon be out of business.
By the way, almost everything Amazon sells is made in China. Outsourcing is just a form of trade.
On January 2nd 2016, we will be celebrating a 2 year anniversary of being a 100% PC free household.

Would you recommend Dan go Apple = No. He does not deserve one.

This is true. At my research lab in graduate school, we ran a detector on a desktop that had Windows 3.11 on it. We had a backup power supply attached to it and never turned it off. We kept it on for something like 14 straight years prior to Hurricane Sandy hitting. Unfortunately, the backup didn't outlast the extended power outage. Regardless, it still works to this day. Funny thing though, it's got a cantilever of dust hanging off the side of the fan. If we ever open up the inside of it, it's probably worse than the inside of vacuum cleaner.

If you own an Apple notebook, you own a PC.

That's the nicest thing you ever said about anyone.

As does Donald. Your point?
The Apple of the Republican Party
Speech recognition fully implemented by IBM in 1986. Even handles correctly picking homonyms.

Apple "invents" speech recognition in 1996, just not as good as the one available on the PC ten years earlier.

Oh, and PCs were "bad" because an idiot MAC fanboy opens a 3d modeling document in a text editor and gets text.
There is one thing surprising about these videos. The 1990s look as primitive as the 1980s. It now seems like computing was so simplistic back then and every great product was low hanging fruit.
