Pretty obvious that corps, esp. service/hospitality business, are trying to throw costs back on the exhausted consumer.

This actually started years ago, when a few decades after breaking janitor unions, hotels began "Recommending" $5/night for room service instead of $5-10 for a week's stay. Back then the millie chicks hadn't fully taken over Media yet so there was pushback in the news.

Now, Restaurants are trying to normalize 20% tips, and tipping for takeou/counter staff at all. Nope!

They already hiked their prices big league before the 20% tip push, so wait staff are already getting proportionally more.

Remember: 15% meh, 18% Good, 20%+ excellent, amazing, beyond the call of duty

And this push started before the $15-18/hr minimum wage hikes in some states.

Tipping the doorman and maybe the porter is normal in NYC, has been for many decades, but the Resident Manager?

The Resident Manager/Supers "tip" comes from a bonus given by the Owners or Management, and those cheap fucks trying to slide it on the residents.

Yep, and even the doorman/porter tipping is a discretionary action, so people used to and should pay them in cash if they appreciate them, it's nobody's fucking business to keep a tally.

Automatic 30% tip added:

And then they want a tip on that new total! Holy shit.

NEVER go to Las Vegas.

Even calculating the tip after tax is outrageos. Should be strictly %% of the price of food.

Needs to have a minus 10% option for late delivery, cold, bite taken out, etc.

Right choice as long as you're not plannig to order from them ever again, LOL.

PS. Don't see a problem with tipping the driver here because how is this different from a waiter bringing your food to your table? You tip for that, right?

I went to a vape shop today to get a vape. All is good. I tell the woman behind the counter I want that one. She turns around, grabs it, scans it, the total pops up on the screen, and a add tip screen pops up. There's no button to skip or opt out, so I entered a custom number, 0, and she has the nerve to cancel the transaction and tell me I needed to enter a valid tip amount.

I asked what am I tipping her for. She told me that it was customary for customers to tip the folks behind the counter. I politely told her I'm not tipping the people at the gas station, I'm not tipping the people at the grocery store, I'm not tipping the people at Walmart, why should I be tipping her for turning around and grabbing my vape. She then scanned my vape, and I entered 0 on the tip screen, and she handed me my vape and receipt. She refused to say a word, and I left with a thank you.

The other day, 4 of use went out to a “fancy” sushi place to catch up. I say “fancy” because this isn’t an upscale place, they just make some crazy rolls and charge a ton for them. Our friend said it was his treat. We’ve all been there before so everyone had their favorites. Everyone ordered 2 rolls, which came out to about $180 before tax for all 8 rolls. We ate quick and were out of there in 45 minutes. It was just under $200 after tax so my friend took out $220 cash and asked if we thought $20 was a good enough tip. We said yes, the server didn’t have to explain anything to use and just brought us water and sushi. So he put it down and we left.

We were chatting next to our cars in the parking lot when the manager (i think) came out and asked us if something was wrong with the service. We were all confused and said no. Then he said, “you guys only left a $20 tip”, and we just stood there even more confused. My buddy said that it was a quick lunch and we felt $20 was a decent tip for less than 45 minutes at the restaurant and us being easy customers who already knew what they wanted. The manager proceeded to say, “we recommend 20% and up on the bottom of the receipt” and just stood there, like he was expecting us to hand over more cash. It was awkward for a few seconds so we just thanked him for the food and went to our cars.

Recommending 20% at an expensive place is one thing, but going out and confronting customers in the parking lot because they didn’t tip 20% is just wild. Ive always been a “flat rate” tipper on more expensive bills. Server has to bring out food whether we order a $8 rolls or $20 rolls, expecting to get a bigger tip just because we ordered the expensive rolls is crazy.

This one doesn’t make sense to me. No, of course you shouldn’t be harassed for leaving a small tip but, yes, that is a small tip.

I popped into a Bubbles Market in San Diego last night. Only two people working, both standing behind the cash register. There were LOTS of craft beer selections so I guess could warrant someone MAYBE coming over to see if I have questions. BUT it is a damn liquor store, so I’ve NEVER had an expectation of service. You pick your selections out, pay, and leave. So I pick my own 4 pack of beer, go to pay and the amount pops up, THEN the screen prompts me for a tip (btw the tip percentage started at 20%). My eyes about popped out of head and I chuckled. Never hit a No Tip button so quickly. But he made it a point to tell me I get 10% off if I bought 4 beers. Yes, I know. I saw the signs. But I bought those 4 beers. My total discount was $2.50.

Why in the ever living hell would I tip a liquor store? Literal INSANITY

Most likely is that the guy who made it is probably illegal and won't see the tip anyway. That's most restaurants these days, cooks are all illegals.

Yes, and 10% used to be normal. Then 15%. Now 20%.

Fuck that inflation. If they are good and actually come to the table they get 15% of the pretax total, otherwise 10% of the pretax total (if they come to the table).

Always zero for just entering numbers on a cash register while I'm standing.

It's not even that. Businesses are trying to push off all the salaries onto the customers. They used to pay that out of revenue, but many learned, and I knew guys like that, that they could offer lower salary if tipping was good. It's in fact just a subsidy to business. It's a scam, not illegal, just immoral.

You said it better than I was trying to say. The businesses scam the workers who are too desperate or stupid to call them on it, then have them de facto begging for a handout instead of being paid a decent wage.

When I was in Dallas, I noticed some very high-end restaurants did not pay their waiters at all, and there was a waiting list to become a waiter at these places. A 15% tip at these meal prices meant very good hourly earnings.

That's the way it always was. Work at cheap restaurants, get low tips. Work at really expensive restaurants, get good tips. The point is that waiters have to work hard and be good at their jobs to get the good gigs. You don't get pro rates doing bush league.

$5 Rolling Rock beer, yet $45 chicken??? I don't get that place (or pricing). I've never had a whole chicken or otherwise that was worth $45 prepared for me. If I did they wouldn't serve rolling rock.

Skip the service charge/tip thing, that food pricing is a racket.

Okay i guess so long as patrons are warned in advance.

Also what headset says.

Also this means the employer is still not paying a living wage and refuses to do so. They could dispense with the BS tips and this sheet altogether and raise their damn wages but they won't.

Because they are afraid their food is too sheety to raise the menu prices maybe.

They use world "gratuity" as novelty to confuse those undereducated, instead of world "tip" which is proudly added below.
100   Blue   @   2026 Feb 16, 8:35pm

Generally, gratuity is for a group, tip is for a family or individual!
It’s disrespectful to ask tip if gratuity has already been added to the bill.
