If they're not on that platform they cease to exist. I'm not a Musk fan boy, but from a business/money perspective, it's the right move. What does a blue checkmark do for me?

I guess Elon is trying to find out who the internet bots or fake accounts are. He should just charge $5 a year using a credit or debit card.

Don't allow more than 3 accounts per credit card which allows someone to have an individual account, and two accounts for businesses they own.

Another way to filter out the bots, if they don't want to go the credit card route, is to put screening tests when logging into Twitter, and also randomly based on how many posts or comments are made. There are plenty of tests that a bot cannot pass.

Back during Internet 1.0 you needed a credit card to register for damn near everything. Even for websites, that didn't necessarily bill you, but by having a credit card.
They knew you weren't a child, and they knew you weren't a bot. Or at least not some person/s registering multiple times for nefarious reasons. It's a way of getting your ID without physically getting an ID.

In many ways, I wish we could all time travel back to 1997 when the discussion about preserving the Internet for Free Speech, and everyone that posted anything on the Internet were not held to the same decency standards as Television and Broadcast. I can see not having any decency censorship restrictions on private forums, where you have to register for that service and you subscribe to various age rated content. But for public static content, I wish, the same broadcasting standards were applied across the board back then. The commies wanted it wide open to mind fuck so many people, into every spectrum imaginable. Twitter and Facebook would be a lot different if they did.
Trump and Patriotic political leaning people would be protected, and trannies spewing their vile hateful profanity would not.
I think had we done it then. Then today, people would know the difference in Biden's rhetoric and the Drive by media deflecting their deviant debauchery on Republicans, and their actions.

It's gotta be tough to drastically and rapidly change the culture of a company. Firing half the employees will help a lot, but I think not enough. He probably wanted to fire more, but knows he risks losing too much skill if he fires a lot of engineers, causing the service to be unreliable.
