I think both cardio and weights are essential for optimum health.

It's a great time to do some Cardio.
I loathe Hamster Wheel crap, but I'm going to walk/jog at least 20-30 minutes a day, 4x a week.
I'm putting the lifting into distant second, just one set for each muscle group, maybe two for big muscles (general legs, chest, back) only 2-3x/week.
James FixxThe first one I thought of. It's amazing how many news stories I've seen of someone dying in their 30's or 40's after a marathon! I'll see someone jogging along in the blazing heat of mid-afternoon and wonder what good they think they're doing their body.
Prolonged cardio has a negative effect on your body.
It lowers Human Growth Hormone (HGH), triiodothyronine (T3) and testosterone.
Meaning lower metabolism, less bone density, muscle loss, cardiovascular problems, and a whole lot more. We have much evidence pointing towards runners having shorter lifespans. The anecdote I remember well: James Fixx, author of The Complete Book of Running, died at 52 of a heart attack, while jogging. We can point to genetics and lifestyle choices for the causes, but the running stunted his ability to repair itself properly would be my theory.
