TRUE OR FALSE: IVERMECTIN

1. IVERMECTIN IS ONLY INTENDED FOR ANIMALS

FALSE.

Ivermectin is a widely used drug for the treatment and control of several neglected tropical diseases.1 The drug has an excellent safety profile, with more than 2.5 billion doses distributed in the last 30 years...
We believe the recent findings regarding ivermectin warrant rapidly implemented controlled clinical trials to assess its efficacy against SARS-CoV-2. ...

2. PEOPLE ARE FILLING UP EMERGENCY ROOMS IN OKLAHOMA BECAUSE OF IVERMECTIN OVERDOSES

FALSE.

ROLLING STONE & MSN - AMONG OTHERS ISSUED UPDATES IN LIGHT OF THIS STATEMENT:
Message from the administration of Northeastern Health System - Sequoyah:
Although Dr. Jason McElyea is not an employee of NHS Sequoyah, he is affiliated with a medical staffing group that provides coverage for our emergency room.
With that said, Dr. McElyea has not worked at our Sallisaw location in over 2 months.
NHS Sequoyah has not treated any patients due to complications related to taking ivermectin. This includes not treating any patients for ivermectin overdose.
All patients who have visited our emergency room have received medical attention as appropriate. Our hospital has not had to turn away any patients seeking emergency care.
We want to reassure our community that our staff is working hard to provide quality healthcare to all patients. We appreciate the opportunity to clarify this issue and as always, we value our community’s support.

CALLS TO TWO OTHER ASSOCIATED HOSPITALS WERE ALSO UNABLE TO SUBSTANTIATE THE CLAIM.

3. IVERMECTIN IS SAFER THAN TYLENOL.

TRUE.

ACCORDING TO...
"Each year a substantial number of Americans experience intentional and unintentional Tylenol (acetaminophen) associated overdoses that can result in serious morbidity and mortality. Analysis of national databases show that acetaminophen-associated overdoses account for about 50,000 emergency room visits and 25,000 hospitalizations yearly. Acetaminophen is the nation's leading cause of acute liver failure, according to data from an ongoing study funded by the National Institutes for Health. Analysis of national mortality files shows about 450 deaths occur each year from acetaminophen-associated overdoses; 100 of these are unintentional."

Ivermectin has continually proved to be astonishingly safe for human use. Indeed, it is such a safe drug, with minimal side effects, that it can be administered by non-medical staff and even illiterate individuals in remote rural communities, provided that they have had some very basic, appropriate training. This fact has helped contribute to the unsurpassed beneficial impact that the drug has had on human health and welfare around the globe...

The Nobel-prize winning scientist (he won his prize for developing ivermectin) Satoshi Omura reports that the rate of Serious Adverse Events for ivermectin is one per million doses.
In Colombia, ivermectin has been commonly prescribed for geriatric patients since 1989, some of whom received treatment for several years.2 We randomly selected the clinical histories of 47 patients, aged 65 years or more (average age 74·7 years), who we followed up for at least 6 months after administration of their first dose of ivermectin (at least 0·2 mg/kg, and in some cases higher). Among 47 patients there was only one death during the 6-month observation period. Many of the patients continued to take ivermectin for months or years after their first dose, and no deaths have been reported.
Our experience, unlike that of Barkwell and Shields, shows that administration of ivermectin to geriatric patients does not produce an excess of deaths. This finding accords with several other reports in the published research noting a high degree of safety for this drug in both animals and human beings.3

4. THE FDA HAS NOT REVIEWED DATA TO SUPPORT USE OF IVERMECTIN IN COVID-19 PATIENTS TO TREAT OR PREVENT COVID-19.

TRUE.

To quote the FDA, “The FDA has not reviewed data to support use of ivermectin in COVID-19 patients to treat or prevent COVID-19. However, some initial research is underway.” What?
Let me repeat that one more time, a little slower.
“The FDA has …. not…. reviewed… data….to support use of ivermectin in COVID-19 patients to treat or prevent COVID-19.”
So, just to get this straight, there have been more than 100 trials involving ivermectin, including 60 peer-reviewed studies. Those studies have involved almost 600 scientists and nearly 25,000 patients. Pooling studies together, it is estimated that ivermectin reduces the risk of death by 66%. And yet by March 2021, the FDA, with its nearly 15,000 employees and a budget exceeding $3 billion, couldn’t be bothered to review the data to support the use of ivermectin, a drug that has been used against COVID-19 in more than 30 countries around the world.

5. AT LEAST 70% OF RECENT CALLS TO THE MISSISSIPPI POISON CONTROL CENTER HAVE BEEN RELATED TO INGESTION OF LIVESTOCK OR ANIMAL FORMULATIONS OF IVERMECTIN.

FALSE.

In an article published Aug. 23, 2021, about people taking livestock medicine to try to treat coronavirus, The Associated Press erroneously reported based on information provided by the Mississippi Department of Health that 70% of recent calls to the Mississippi Poison Control Center were from people who had ingested ivermectin to try to treat COVID-19.
State Epidemiologist Dr. Paul Byers said Wednesday the number of calls to poison control about ivermectin was about 2%.
