My high school senior is interested in learning video editing skills for school and college projects. Please recommend a windows based video editing software.

Adobe Creative Cloud includes Premiere and After Effects, as well as an animation program. Adobe has academic pricing as well.

I will ask the student to follow up on academic pricing.

What is he using at school? Mostly likely Apple and Mac only products.

For Windows, have him play around with KDendlive and OBS Studio.

Those are both free feature rich programs for what they are. One is a video editing suite, and the other is a live stream orchestrator.

Also checkout VideoLan, and get to know how use it to supplement features in the other two.

He uses a school furnished pathetic chromebook; they are not allowed to use their own laptop. Thank you for the recommendations.

You are correct. I bought him a Dell Precision desktop with 16 GB ram and Windows 10 and Eizo monitor recently.

Place opaque tape over the camera, and if you have an old pair of headphones, cut off the end of the headphones near the plug, and short all the wires together, and plug it into the microphone port.

How will these measures help?

It'll teach the school to stay away from Chromebooks.

Gotcha.

Right now, some parents are not happy with the proposed 4 CRT lessons during next academic year.

These devices being owned by the schools can be accessed by the schools at any time.

Plugging in a shorted out headphone plug will disable the built in microphone.

Placing tape over the camera makes it inaccessible unless you remove it.

I work at companies where it's compulsory to have your cameras taped over. Don't trust your skool to care about your kid's privacy. It might seem paranoid - TRUST ME, it's not. It's absolutely not. There's a reason there's no hard switches for these anymore. It's trivial enough to have an LED light up when (and only when) the device is being powered, but for SOME REASON these aren't even included. Would literally cost less than 1 penny for the bill of materials.

I put Gorilla glue on the camera on my Laptop. All video from the camera just look like a yellowish distorted haze.

Well that's fine, if you never want to remove it.

They sell little adhesive covers that you can stick over laptop camera that allow you to open and close it if it didn't have that option built in.

I wonder if one could build a device so when the camera is accessed, the hacker just sees a video loop of Jeff Toobin doing his thing.
