Home ownership is situational. If you want to stay mobile, rent. If you plan to set roots in an area, buy.

Economically it's a good decision usually to rent, but it's often a pain in the ass.

Buying a place usually goes along with another doubtful economic decision; marriage.

Addendum:
I can personally attest to the behavior of females and buying houses.

Several females I know in Florida assumed I owned property here, but I left for California for a couple of years.
Upon return, they often suggest that I buy a place (to cohabitate).
I may buy a place, just not yet.

You'll own nothing, and you'll be happy.

Buy land.

That's my conclusion.

You can do the calculations with the NY Slimes rent-vs-buy calculator, which is pretty good. But you have to guess at many things, like how long you'll be there, interest rates, rent hikes, etc.

I think the decision is ultimately driven for most men by pussy power alone, not rationality or economics.
