It is no secret that James Murdoch, the son of media mogul Rupert Murdoch, and his wife Kathryn have supported Democratic causes. But a new report from CNBC reveals that the couple launched a massive spending effort ahead of the 2020 election that rivaled left-wing billionaire George Soros.

Data released last spring indicated that James and Kathryn gave $11 million to political causes, including $2.5 million to Democrats. However, they also quietly gave a stunning $100 million to James’s nonprofit foundation, Quadrivium, in 2019, a ‘large chunk’ of which went to political groups.

‘The 2019 tax document shows that of the $100 million given to the foundation, over $25 million went toward grants, including for several political causes,’ CNBC reported. ‘According to a person close to the family, that $25 million two years ago was only part of massive Murdoch investments through the 2020 election cycle.’

By contrast, Soros, who is routinely cited as one of the left’s top donors, gave $28.3 million to Democrats and left-leaning political groups during the first three months of the 2020 election.

Kathryn previously revealed that Quadrivium funded Bill Kristol’s Defending Democracy Together, which went on to launch Republican Voters Against Trump, Republicans for the Rule of Law and Former Republican National Security Officials for Biden. The nonprofit has also given to the Brennan Center and Represent Us, both of which are pushing hard for Congress to pass the Democrat-led For the People Act and the Center for a New American Security, which accused Trump of being too deferential to Vladimir Putin and advocates for the VA to fund ‘gender-confirming surgery’ for troops. Kathryn and James also personally gave millions to the Biden Victory Fund and other Democratic super PACs.

The $100 million investment in Quadrivium was given the same day Disney acquired 21st Century Fox in a $71.3 billion deal. James later resigned from News Corp’s board, citing ‘disagreements over certain editorial content published by the Company’s news outlets and certain other strategic decisions.’

Kathryn, meanwhile, serves on the Aspen Institute’s Commission on Information Disorder with Prince Harry. The commission, which says it ‘aims to identify and prioritize the most critical sources and causes of information disorder’, has published several podcasts and resources identifying right-wing media as spreaders of disinformation and Trump supporters as its consumers.
