What a surprise! In June, 1979, I went with a friend from Dallas to Lansing, MI in his 1971 442 W-30 Olds convertible to attend the National Oldsmobile meet. He told he was going to take two five gallon cans of gasoline along in the trunk in case we had trouble buying gas in those gas line days. I told if he did, I wasn't going because it was too dangerous, the fumes would accumulate and it just wasn't worth it. He backed down and I went along. Once we got out of Dallas proper, we didn't have one problem buying gas, only the Sunday after the meet the stations were closed, but I was flying back anyway because I couldn't get Monday off. The allocations were engineered for big cities to give the impression of shortages where there weren't any, not in small towns. I would fill up in West and Waco on weekends, drive back to Dallas in my '70 Olds Delta 88 that got 12 MPG and ride the bus to work during the week, seeing gas lines every morning at the QuikStop across the street.
