Samsung's Austin fab was offline for more than a month after it was shut
down due to power outages during the freeze... About 71,000 wafers were
affected by production disruptions, said Han Jinman, executive
vice-president of Samsung's memory chip business. He estimated the wafer
loss is equivalent to $268 million to $357 million.

Semiconductor fabs are typically operational 24 hours a day for years on
end. Each batch of wafers — a thin slice of semiconductor used for the
fabrication of integrated circuits — can take 45 to 60 days to make, so
a shutdown of any length can mean a loss of weeks of work. Restoring a
fab is also a complicated process, and even in the best of circumstances
can take a week...
NXP Semiconductors was also among the facilities that
were shut down in February, as its two Austin fabrication facilities
were offline for nearly a month. In March, the company estimated the
shutdown would result in a $100 million loss in revenue and a month of
wafer production...

How the fuck one runs a plant like that w/o backup power on-site? No, seriously, WTF is wrong with these morons?

That is a great progress compre to months before. But still it's a loss!

I heard automotive industry that use a bit old chips with lots of demand effected every other chip types shortage for a months. There's no easy way out.

Samsung seems to have trouble with all things electrical. They lost something like $5 BILLION on their Galaxy Note 7 battery fires. (Not to mention the P.R. black eye and other intangibles.). That's about the final (way-over-budget) price tag on Apple's new spaceship campus.

First, this: https://patrick.net/post/1327625/2019-10-02-shitsung

Second, the plant requires an incredible amount of energy and so is probably not conducive to running on generators. The reason I suspect this is that one of my best friends from high school (I seemed to have a new one each year) is an electrician in San Antonio. He's the guy who 'energized' the samsuck plant, a job that nobody else wanted to do. Apparently it's dangerous and you can die. He is apparently famous among electricians in TX now for doing that. These days he does several jobs, one of which is running that sort of thing for the Toyota truck factory in SA.

Yeah, their refrigerators all sucked balls too and sadly by the time they started making them and selling them here in the states our media was all paid off.

There were some sting operations in Canada though that busted them. Sort of.

I worked in that business for decades. It's not as simple and easy as you say.

Losing $268M is easy though.

If this fab plant had it's own generators, they would have been natural gas powered and taken offline anyway.

I think this is literally true.

You can go to "public relations" firms, and if you pay them, they in turn will contact and pay off "journalists" at very prestigious institutions to say whatever you want the public to hear. They probably have a stable of professors at Ivy League schools for hire as well.

Hey, journalists have to supplement their meager salaries somehow, now that Facebook and Google have taken all of the revenue out of journalism.

I'm pretty sure giant backup gens at our datacenters are diesel. Going solely by the smell of the exhaust these things emit during test runs/drills.

Well.

I did just assume but what else could it be. We're a much larger country and used to have that sort of media. No stings anymore except maybe the local schmo on local news like we have here in SD.

It ain't right!
