Hi all,

My wife and I are considering buying a 2nd home (vacation home) somewhere within 3.5hrs of the SF bay area.

It should be somewhere near water (lake, river, or ocean). Our budget is <$700k

Im interested to hear any recommendations on where we should look and why.

Some ideas we’ve looked at are Shaver Lake, Huntington Lake, Silver Lake, CA central coast.

Idea would be to Airbnb during times my family and I aren’t able to utilize it ourselves.

Thank you in advance for any recommendations.

Tell me about Discovery Bay. From what I know about it, I think we are looking for something a little less populous and a bit more wilderness...

Forgot one requirement... cannot be a common destination of riff-raff...

Depends on what you consider riff-raff.

People like Pinecrest, just outside Yosemite.

Same as most people... loud, obnoxious, poor people who drink too much and have little to lose. Dry wiper types...

Based on what I heard, It seems quiet town.
There are lot of expensive homes in town.

@BayArea Did you end up getting a place?

If you get a place more than two hours drive from your main, you likely won't go there very often. People in the central valley usually have a mountain lake place within 90 minutes drive. Our Santa Cruz place is 70 minutes away and we spend half our time there. Mountain places also have to be heated year round to prevent freezing, even if you are not there. Lots of turnover in Tahoe, I know so many people who bought there and then sold when nobody went there very often. Better to rent ad hoc than to buy.
