In Serious Incident, Software Glitch Miscalculates the Weight of Three UK Flights

By Eric Holder follow Eric Holder   2021 Apr 12, 11:59am 185 views   12 comments   watch   nsfw   quote   share

An update to the airline's reservation system while its planes were
grounded due to the coronavirus pandemic led to 38 passengers on the
flight being allocated a child's "standard weight" of 35kg [77 pounds]
as opposed to the adult figure of 69kg [152 pounds]. This caused the
load sheet — produced for the captain to calculate what inputs are
needed for take-off — to state that the Boeing 737 was more than 1,200kg
lighter [2,645 pounds] than it actually was.

Investigators described the glitch as "a simple flaw" in an IT system.
It was programmed in an unnamed foreign country where the title "Miss"
is used for a child and "Ms" for an adult female.

?? Why don't they just weigh the passengers as they go through security? What? They can't put a scale there, and associate it with the ticket, which you have to show to get through security? The passengers don't even have to know they are being weighed.

They should have used the Dominion software. It would have doubled the total weight, but only for one passenger.

Didn't Boeing outsource their MCAS SW development to some $15-per-hour shop too?

Who cares if they did? They just killed a bunch of people, and got a bunch of their fleet grounded. The US taxpayer will bail them out, they are part of the MIC. They'll never go bankrupt or lose money.

That was one of the funny things about flying in a very small plane from Galway to Inisheer. They literally weigh you and then tell you which side of the plane to sit on.

Common on small planes commercially, 20pax or less. 38pax on a 737 being miscalculated by 75lbs is a nothing burger. They don't weigh carry on luggage. If it was a mostly empty flight then they might have you move on a 737, but I've only experienced that once.

I'll frequently put the heaviest stuff in my carry on to avoid having checked bags be overweight. I've easily had 60lbs carry on bags, close to the weight of a kid basically. You'd be surprised how much clothing you can fit in a bag and what it weighs. We usually use checked bags for toys, games, and gear that is too big to fit in a standard carry on or personal bag.

I hate checking bags, but we've had to do it more adding the nephew to our trips. Rental cars are more of a bitch. Tip to those that have two kids. Vasectomy. Travel is close to 50% higher due to occupancy rules at hotels or needing a bigger house. Or you have to compromise on vacation rentals because you need a big bunk bed room. Two kids is enough. You replaced yourself I suppose.

Fuck a bunch of that!
I have three kids and my third is my favorite in a lot of ways. Hotels are easily dealt with by booking for four. We bring a camp cot or ask for a rollaway bed for the third kid. Never had a problem with any hotel objecting to our third kid. This would probably be different at an all inclusive place or a cruise(should those ever come back into style), but I’m sure there’s a workaround.

This is a biggie for us as all inclusive trips are sooooooooo much easier. So usually a 2nd room is required or you have to get some 1 or 2 bed suite.

I don't want to be on vacation and worry about getting caught. Especially with hotels. I'd rather go in knowing what I'm paying instead of being pissed if a hotel or resort calls you out for occupancy issues and charges you whatever rates they want to on the spot. It does happen.

I frankly don't like being outnumbered. I also have a spouse, that covid aside, travels a lot for work. So I'm the solo guy taking care of everything much of the time and still working. Given we've taken on the 3rd past the baby/toddler age, the addition of the 3rd is massively noticeable. Like big time. If you've raised them from babies you won't notice the cost difference.

Adding a 9 year old adds to everything. We churn through extra milk, bread, butter, etc. at an alarming rate. I wouldn't have noticed if we had just raised them from birth. None of the kids are fatties either.

Either way, the 3rd is an added cost for travel. Studios and single room hotels are basically out of the question. Kids meals in popular areas ain't cheap. My situation is also unique having 2 companion passes with SW. 1 extra person is a 33% increase in our airfare. Excursions. We haven't even hit the years where these kids will want full on adult meals at $15-20 a pop. Wife and I will drop $70-80 w/ tip on an average lunch. Throw in 3 kids. Fuck.

I didn't have the vasectomy choice anyway. My SIL was/is a fuck up so we've taken the nephew in. We're just doing the right thing. I'm just recommending not having 3 kids as an opinion, just like Fauci now recommends 2 masks.... as an opinion....

There are two kinds of nations in this world.

Those that use the metric system.

...and those that have been to the Moon.

I suppose they tell the fat guy not to walk back to the toilet unless he notifies the pilot first.

No toilet on that plane. Short flight.
