Aides of Andrew Cuomo, the governor of New York governor, rewrote a report from the state’s health department to remove data showing the number of nursing home residents who had died in the pandemic, it was claimed last night.

The report, published last July, allowed the governor to treat a controversy at the time over nursing home deaths as resolved and enabled him to burnish his record during the pandemic, which he soon began writing about in a book published in the autumn titled American Crisis: Leadership Lessons from the Covid-19 Pandemic.

However, an initial draft of the report had cited a much higher figure for the toll among nursing home residents, according to The New York Times, which said that aides to
