“ Families have been forced to improvise by the failures of public schools, which were once the default education choice, by the abandonment of programs, and by the accelerated politicization of classrooms. They've enrolled their kids in private schools when budgets allowed, taught their children at home, reinvented homeschooling co-ops as pandemic pods, and tried out competent remote-learning options. Many discover that previously daunting choices are pretty enticing once they're familiar.

"[P]arents' dissatisfaction with the public education system and a newfound preference for working from home could lead to a permanent increase in the popularity of homeschooling," writes Anne Dennon, who covers higher education trends, policy, and student issues for BestColleges. "Many academics who study homeschooling say the pandemic's boost to the homeschool movement will last."

Permanent growth in homeschooling is in the works, Christopher Lubienski, a professor of education policy at Indiana University, advised Education Week, "partly because people who haven't really thought about it before suddenly saw themselves forced into [home schooling], and then realizing that it's something they can see themselves doing."

Convenience factor of baby sitting and a free meal don't outweigh that public education is a tax glutted indoctrination camp full of apparatchiks and self serving bureaucrats.

Governments throughout the country should have terminated all public schools and restarted them fresh during the downtime of the pandemic. Since the students and parents were getting the free food or free babysitting anyway, that was the perfect time to reboot.

After Leading School Closures, Berkeley Teachers Union President Spotted Dropping Daughter Off at In-Person Preschool
Dr. Shelene Stine treats COVID-19 patients at Highland Hospital's Department of Internal Medicine, but she's also a parent of 3-year-old twins who attend the same preschool as Meyer's daughter. Stine also has a 5-year-old attending kindergarten at a Berkeley Unified School District school.
The divide between the quality in-person teaching her twins receive at the preschool — which includes "play-based learning" — compared to the senses-dulling video screens her 5-year-old looks at for distance learning is a yawning chasm, she said. She has spoken at rallies to reopen public schools and written public letters to the Berkeley Unified School District to push them to reopen safely.

This is probably the best thing to come out of COVID and the Teachers Union grab sponsored by the Chicom financed Big Business & Democrats.

Kudos to these Parents, these are Alinsky Tactics, that work. Not George Will "Up above the Fray, Reason, Hmmm, Hummm, Ummmm" tactics that after 25 years, find us with Drag Queens with Kindergarteners in Public Schools and Libraries, along with "Choose your own Bathroom based on your feelz that day" everywhere including K-12.

Personalize your Enemy and make him an object of ridicule.

Still at a loss why my district isn't full time. It's not a union thing either here in my small town. I think in the K-5 building we maybe, maybe have 1 or 2 people over 50. The next board meeting is going to be interesting. I guess the mom group on FB (per my wife) is livid at this point. This shit just needs to end.

We also have a large homeschooling group in my community. I think some parents can handle it, but most of those kids aren't well accepted. Might work better in the city with more possible socialization. I know one couple very well and we don't hang out often because their kids are socially awkward and not very intelligent. Some of these parents brag about their kid being at X grade level for X subject. You see their kids interact and talk, and it's nah, I'm calling BS on that.

And I'm not a huge fan of public schools at all either. I'm just super frugal outside of travel and cannot justify paying property taxes and private school tuition for 3 kids now. I'm also of the mindset that all you really need is to be able to read, write/type and know math. From there it's up to the parents and the child to learn and grow, not teachers, public or private. I just don't think full time homeschooling is good for 90% of parents that try/do it.

We enrolled our daughter in a hybrid program(been that way since they opened almost 20 years ago). She's in school three days a week, has packet work on the other days. Classroom averages 5 students per grade(small town). She did that remote bullshit for a month or two before they started meeting in class, so she's been in school almost the entire year.

If this option ever goes away, we will home school her, NO WAY I'll let me kid get a shit education with online classes.

There's a flexible program in many states, such as Florida. You hang out with your kid for an hour M-F just like you would regular homework, you make sure they are keeping up with their work and check their Math and maybe teach other skills schools don't teach like Actual non-Victim History and Geography. The rest of the day they are doing a few hours online/written assignments. It only works though if your kid is starting to read decently, around Grade 3. A private or state-wide public (FLVS) school keeps the grades and they are eligible for a proper diploma.

Do teachers realize how many other "Professionals" are regularly supervised, tested, and forced to keep records of their personal performance?

Not just their client's outcomes, but HOW and WHY they did things a certain way.

California law does not allow for virtual learning, waiver expires at end of June

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - California lawmakers will debate whether to allow distance learning next year as state law does not allow for virtual learning.

The waiver that has allowed distance learning for this topsy-turvy school year expires on June 30.

State Assemblyman Phil Ting (D-San Francisco) tweeted that lawmakers will debate whether to allow distance learning in this year's budget meetings.

In December, he introduced AB10, which would require public schools to reopen under most circumstances during the pandemic when infection rates drop.

"As a father, I worry about all the learning loss occurring and the millions of kids who are falling behind, as a result of our sole reliance on remote teaching – not to mention the impacts of social isolation," Ting said at the time. "Schools in other states and countries have prioritized in-person learning during COVID-19 and have done so without major outbreaks. California ought to follow that path."
