Just another day in San Francisco:

"His family said that Woitel sent “paranoid” messages to family and friends in the days before his disappearance about the U.S. Capitol attacks and escaping to the mountains, according to the publication."

And people think Republicans are crazy?

SF is a shithole - we have a guy with a transponder breaking into the car(s) in the neighborhood at ease multiple times a week, people have resigned to the fact that the police is doing nothing and just have to remember not to leave anything in the car, not even registration or other papers. Some have bums sleeping in their cars regularly. Do not buy any property in SF or the immediate surrounding, the leftoids have destroyed this city. It's going downhill fast.

No problem, won't be buying. From my perspective from IL as a high schooler in the 90's, it had this hippy appeal at that age. Let's go get stoned in CA. I went there when I had just turned 18 in 2001 on a big cross country road trip with 4 other buddies from high school.

Holy fuck it was a shit hole then. At the time you also had Full House making it look glamorous in the opening and the B-roll for the show (maybe it had ended by then, not sure). That is not remotely what I experienced back then. All 5 of us were like this place fucking sucks and stayed just a night.

Was there about 10 years earlier (8ish) and did the tourist shit. That was more enjoyable, but I was a kid. Noticed things, but didn't understand it at that age. I think it may have been just as bad.

The amount of homelessness I've experienced in CA is staggering compared to anywhere I've ever traveled. Austin has its gutter punks and other homeless (I'm sure they're enjoying it now....lol) is about the closest. Seattle actually is close too. Didn't stop in Portland summer of 2019 and hadn't been since I was a kid. I know that's probably just as bad.

There's this draw I think for people across the country to move west. Grass ain't green on the other side, regardless of weather is all I'll say from my experiences.

Lifelong Bay Arean. I tried to live elsewhere but always find myself within 30 miles of where I was born in Oakland.

California is still awesome. Recreational opportunities abound. I have not been sailing since Friday, but I will probably go out for a couple of hours before the end of the week. There are a dozen trailheads within 5 miles of where I live. Closest ski slopes are a couple hours away. My wife and I take a 2 1/2 mile stroll down to the local marina almost every morning. Homeless well controlled in my little east bay city. There are still good places to be.

The state government really sucks. The way the big Bay Area cities handle crime and homelessness trickles out. Laws are selectively enforced. The highways are a mess. There are so many people on the dole that it is bankrupting the system. We all know the budget is unsustainable and the piper will one day have to be payed. If cannibal anarchy starts anywhere it will be here in California.

But for me, it's home.

California is the best place in the country to grow yams. Never forget that.

To clarify, just because people are (rightfully) bashing the leftoid shit government corruption doesn't mean that there aren't pockets in CA that are still better than many if not most areas in other states (crime and hobos are very local to SF). The climate is unbeatable and nature is stunning. Wine country is gorgeous. Plus CA is not the only leftoid run state, the corruption runs deep in every blue state. It's time to move into one of those pockets for a few years, then re-evaluate whether it's time for a new adventure and to abandon the state.

I'd abandon the state. I have my beefs with IL, but I know most of you guys are from and live in CA. There's a new post almost once a week on some BS you guys have to deal with. Everyone has their reasons to stay, so not judging by any means or saying it's wrong. Just seems weird that almost any new post about CA is a complaint.

I know the weather is great, but the scenery can be found in a lot of states with just some hotter or colder weather that still overall is good. Surfing would be the only thing you couldn't do as I don't think anyone wants to live in Oregon or Washington just because of surfing, as CA would make more sense for that.

It's also cheaper to live in pretty much any other state you can think of. Covid has opened employers eyes that remote working can work. You can basically make the same or more anywhere in the country, or even another country, unless you're in some super unique field like SpaceX rocket technician physically working on rockets.

If you're like our crypto pumpers here, follow the money. High wealth people are getting out of CA. They can easily handle the high cost of living there and likely have amazing properties. Why are they leaving? This is one situation where I'd maybe start following the money.

Recall Newsom, fight back, but like any blue state I don't see it turning around anytime soon. Your taxes, fees, greenhouse tolls (lol) will for sure continue to go up. I'm sure there are less leftist pockets in CA, but the entire place seems to be going down the toilet. Being in a different part of the toilet doesn't negate that you're still in a toilet.

Just my 2¢. I'm sure not a popular opinion, as I know you guys like the place, just my interpretation having visited and seeing the posts here all the time about the problems. I know some of you guys travel, but if you're not seeing different things, it's hard to say CA is the best and just settle for it. Unless you're a hyper family person and need to be near them, flights are cheap. Or own a business or have to work at a physical location to make the money you do.

TL:DR - Just check out this image I made. CA is in baaaaaaad shape and only going to get worse.

They were just keeping the stiff in the house waiting for the Congressional relief checks to steal, but he started smelling too bad.

Besides, he'll still be voting Democrat for the next fifty years.

There's no doubt that CA is taxing its most productive members to the hilt while fucking things up, but IL is in no way better, it may actually beat CA in terms of corruption, so really if you're looking to make a difference you'd move to TX or FL, but we all have family and other ties, plus the climate in CA is unbeatable, compared that to TX and FL. Still on the long run we will likely relocate out of state, but probably only for FL, TX, CT (also blue) or a combo of ME plus summer house. The leftoids in CA can be pretty annoying but they are also moving out of CA ind infest most other states, so if you find a more conservative enclave in CA you may be fine.

Texas now has fifty foot glaciers to keep Californians out. Some catastrophes have a silver lining.

Definitely not claiming IL is better. $$$$$ speaks loudly though. I'd hit the 13% progressive income tax in CA. It's a flat 4.75% here in IL after deductions. My monthly nut is $1,200/mo PITI. Same house in CA and everything else the same I'd easily be approaching $4k/mo. Sure there's potential appreciation, but Uhaul rates are showing otherwise on a level I haven't seen. People are leaving in droves at this point.

Work aside, I can travel to CA one week a month with the income tax savings alone for a year in my situation. So 2-3 months of visiting? Factor in the cost of living and I've got even more money. I've researched the hell out of this as we looked into moving out there very seriously. Income in CA for white collar jobs is no different than any other part of the country. It simply isn't. You're paying for bad taxes, politicians, pensions, and weather. I get the weather, but in my situation and math I did, it would have been a $30-40k/yr tax. I'd rather invest that, be done once the kids are out, and live in the Caribbean at 50 with $3M+ in the bank.

Again, not bashing CA, there's no benefit to being there besides family or weather though. Surfing I guess if that's your jam, which is totally fine. Scenery is better in a ton of areas in the West though. Weather and water you cannot drink or are rationed is what you pay for. I don't know, doesn't make sense to me, but I'm not right all the time.

Yeah obviously house prices and rents (now to a lesser degree) are a big negative for CA. I wouldn't buy to invest now but maybe buy something nice for the next couple of years that will hold its value or appreciate, just have to stay clear of immediate SF area. Longer term it's probably Calexit, we'll see.
