Went to Texas License to carry course last week. Overall, somewhat boring exercise, a lot of legal stuff and a handgun shooting exam.

Guy lecturing was a Texas police officer. A few thoughts which may or may not be interesting to Patnetters:

1. God Bless Texas! I did not realize how much more reasonable our gun laws were compared to many (most) other states. Result is, as policeman said, we have relatively speaking much less crime adjusted for population, population composition, and population density compared with many other states. He said it is because of our gun laws (everyone thinks Texans are crazy, and lets keep them thinking that way), and it is probably partially true. I suppose good economy is another reason.

2. We don't have castle laws because we can defend ourselves in any place where we have the right to be. You can shoot an assailant in a public park, for example, and it will not be different from shooting him in your home.

3. Guns, including guns on visitors, are allowed in Texas Capitol. Since (most) legislators are armed themselves, it is highly unlikely that an idiot would attempt something stupid. Goes back to fact that most shootings occur in GUN-FREE zones.

4. Some time ago a homeowner shot two burglars who were burglarizing his neighbors house. He called police, who as usual took their time in a donut shop, then he shot burglars dead since police was not showing up. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Horn_shooting_controversy - this is slanted wiki but it gives facts. He got cleared by Grand jury as expected, but then he got sued in civil court, not by the relatives of burglars, but by illegal immigrant advocate organization (two who were shot were illegals from Colombia, part of a burglary ring). He won, but only after burning through 150K collected by his neighbors, all his savings, and house. He was left penniless.

Sounds like Texas needs to do some work on it's handling of Civil suits. A right to defend yourself (or any right at all) requires that you do not pay a price for exercising said right.

I have no idea - this does not make any logical sense. This part was also not covered in any news, as the "undocumented immigrant advocates" would be exposed as defenders of looters.

I took the concealed weapons class in Florida.

What I can remember is that you can use a weapon (use can be brandish, point, or shoot, etc.) if you reasonably believe that either you or a person near you is in imminent danger of severe injury or death.

A guy coming at you with a baseball bat is okay; a guy swinging a foam pool noodle isn’t, don’t shoot him.

The other is that you are not required to know why someone is in your home before you use the gun.
A tent, a boat, a house, an apartment, or your car is your “home” while you’re in it.

The police guy who gave the class said that nobody got sued for pepper spray, in case you’re concerned about that.

You can’t carry your gun in Florida into “places of nuisance”; strip clubs, bars, gambling joints, etc. are off limits.

A grey area may be restaurants, many of which have a bar.

This should be repeated over and over in all debates about gun control.

Proper gun control is using both hands.
