The covid shutdowns would have been a great time to freeze out the unions. Re-open when you have all non-union school staff and teachers. Doing that would be "let now catastrophe go to waste" in the good sense of the phrase. Oh well.

For those with kids going back to school, do you really want your kid to go to school and be required to wear a mask for 6 straight hours? This is child abuse.
3   Onvacation   2021 Feb 8, 3:01pm

What the actual fuck!

The death rate for those less than 50 with no comorbidities is statistically zero. That covers all students and most teachers.

The average age of death WITH Wuhan is 82. Sad but their life was almost over.

Of course the schools should reopen. Who the fuck are we trying to protect?
4   Onvacation   2021 Feb 8, 3:02pm

AND only 1 in 1,000 have died WITH the Wuhan in California over the last year. They were not children.

Agreed! The lack of common sense is stunning. Some people think that if you have a mask on no viruses can be passed to the person you are fucking. They also think a chain link fence will stop mosquitoes.

How are they going to enforce that? Can't suspend anyone anymore, bwahahahahaha:

California schools will no longer be able to suspend students in elementary and middle school for disrupting school activities or “willfully defying” the authority of teachers or administrators, ending a practice that many say is counterproductive and unfairly applied to black students.
Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation late Monday ending suspensions in all public and charter schools for “willful defiance” in grades 4 through 5 and banning them in grades 6 to 8 for five years. Such suspensions were already banned in grades K-3.

I am starting to think that the unionized public teachers are exploiting the situation to receive their full pay without going to school.

There's some "good" reasons to do this. Many of the teachers must commute horribly long distances to the school. That's expensive.

Many teachers are parents of their own schoolagers. They've been using their kids' schools as childcare. Now their own kids are at home.

The commutes, and childcare problems, are real problems for the teachers. But, they're not our problems. They're the teachers' problems.

Since my gym is closed I have been walking through neighborhoods all over San Jose during the normal hours of instruction. The school parking lots are nearly empty. Of public schools, all levels K-12.

This morning, my walk route took me through the parking lot of Valley Christian (private) School in San Jose. Valley Christian is a massive complex. The faculty parking lots were packed with vehicles. I saw no evidence of students in attendance. So I think they're getting their instruction via streaming like the public schools. But the faculty parking lot is packed.

What is going on? It's a private (can you say, non-union?) school. Either by edict from their administration, or by peer pressure or their work ethic, are the faculty are enduring the commutes and addressing their personal problems, and "going to the office" to do the virtual teaching from their classrooms? Is that why the faculty parking lot is full when the school seems empty?

If unionized public school teachers are worried about their personal safety and that's why they don't want classroom instruction, that's one thing: if the teacher is the only person in the classroom guiding the online instruction then they have nothing to worry about. But, if their real motivation is to save money on commuting and childcare, save time on personal grooming and commuting (sleep a bit later?), "work" beyond the gaze of a roving principal or administrator, well that's a scam. And because it's public money, it's a taxpayer scam.

LA schools are shit show too. Union refuses to open. Parents disregarded, no ducking accountability.

Valley Christian in our neck of the woods is doing in-person from Preschool to Middle school. HS is either remote or "Zoom pods" on campus.

The perfect bureaucratic/public service union evolution is eventually to get and keep getting all of the money without doing any of the work you got the money for. The California school system is approaching that bureaucratic ideal. The Communist indoctrination is free.

I'm still shocked schools aren't open 100% full throttle. I now know 3-4 kids under 18 that have had it. They were not sick at all and only tested because a family member had it or a girlfriend (one high schooler). Not symptomatic of anything for the most part outside of having some sinus congestion and maybe can't smell/taste. We need them spreading this and the parents, grandparent, great grandparents can decide like adults if they want to see each other.

I didn't realize till now that the elementary classes are held on a different campus at a different location. That explains why the big (high school) campus on the hill, with packed faculty parking lot, appeared empty of students.

Yeah, it is sinking in. Or maybe I should say, stinking in.

Come on! A classroom is a large space. Mostly with HVAC systems that are superior to an individual residence. If the teacher is the only person in it giving live online instruction, that's not a danger to the teacher during a contagion. Not any more than being confined in smaller spaces at home with others. Maybe an argument could even be made that the teacher giving online instruction from an empty classroom is more isolated, and so even safer, than at her/his residence.

But that would involve being under the potential watchful eye of a principal or other administrator roving around the campus to observe. (Just like in normal times unless the union is so powerful that it has obtained policies preventing such banal normalcy). It would also involve bearing the cross (and expense) of commuting, and whatever personal attention is paid to appearance (grooming, clothes, etc). Not so in a streaming instruction from home, only head and shoulders in view. And the problems that those teachers with their own schoolage children have with childcare.

This is beginning to feel like a scam.

Cmon dude. I mean, many if not most private schools have been in person for the whole year! My two youngest kids have been in person this year no masks at a private Christian school. Their mental health is 100% better than when they were home in the last semester of last school year. Plus they are learning good morals and values. The ONLY downside is the cost of tuition, but I’ve been making more money during this Covid thing so we can afford it.
Public school teachers have totally been exploiting this crisis since April 2020, when the lockdown refused to end.

It's starting to look that way.
20   BayArea   2021 Feb 9, 7:47am

My kids have been in private school (mid peninsula) for the past year without a single incident of covid (or at least not known incident).

Yes, it’s insanely expensive but our family would be under extreme stress if we didn’t have private school to send our kids while my wife and I work.

The situation with the public schools, covid, unions, etc is a massive travesty.

Listening to the teachers carp and moan about returning to work on the radio news like they're somehow more fragile than the rest of us essential workers REALLY galls the listener. It makes me want to say FIRE THE LOT OF THEM. In fact, it's a PERFECT time to clean house from the top of the Department of Education to the bottom of every local district. Rebuild the system with better pay from a better pool of teachers, but withOUT the top heavy load of nepot administrators who multiply the education budget but do fuck-all toward the actual education of kids.

Was gonna say, private schools have it easier covering up. Not defending public schools by any means as they piss me off bigly. If it's a religious private school, I'm not certain they're required to report in a lot of places. We're close to going the private route, but we've got solid public schools actually where we're at. No interest in double paying between taxes and tuition. Our district has hit over 5% of staff and students getting covid from the start of the school year (August). We also don't wear masks and everything operates as normal for the most part.

@B.A.C.A.H.,

There is nearly no corona transmission for in-person classes. Texas Tech university had its smaller classes in-person even in Fall (with social distancing), and nearly no transmission was observed. All of these school closures is just a ploy to get salary without working.

Even taking at face value their own argument that being in a classroom full of students is a public health threat, having the work ethic and professionalism to show up on time to empty classrooms (like at Valley Christian) to lead the online streaming classes would not be a public health threat. Like I wrote further up in this thread, if they're worried about catching the virus they're probably safer in an empty classroom than in their own homes.

This is a con job on the taxpayers.

Police in dorms, outdoor exercise ban: UC Berkeley extends dorm lockdown with stricter mandates
Police officers monitoring dormitory halls, frequent inspections of ID cards — these are among the measures being implemented in a dorm lockdown as UC Berkeley continues to grapple with a spike of COVID-19 cases on campus.
First reported by the Daily Californian, the self-sequester mandate for UC Berkeley students living in the dormitories, originally intended to end Monday, has been extended for another week, with stricter security measures in place to enforce quarantining.
