There was never a reason to have a tech office in SF proper in the first place. So it's a return to normal.

And obligatory: FUCK SF.
2   Patrick   2021 Jan 20, 10:34pm

Agreed, FUCK SF

Let me know when they put Columbus back in his rightful place on Telegraph Hill and get a conservative city government. Until then, I'm not going there.

Disappointed with SF
4   clambo   2021 Jan 21, 6:02am

It’s the normal cycle of economics.

Cities often decay and lose their appeal; think Philadelphia, Detroit, Baltimore.

San Francisco is nice to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there.
5   BayArea   2021 Jan 21, 6:13am

Wait, they just figured out what is being shared in in that article??

Despite all the problems, SF will always have appeal to to the geographical location, weather, landmarks.

The masses will continue to come from around the world.

San Francisco is the modern day Gomorrah. Economic disaster isn’t enough. It should be wiped out with fire and brimstone.

I am not so sure....

Even the touristy areas have turned into shit-holes with aggressive drug addicts and homeless people accosting people.

I've been going to SF for over 20 years for work and used to live in San Jose back in the mid 90's. Even before the COVID quarantines, it was striking how shitty the City has gotten in recent years. I've nixed two family vacations to the Bay Area over the last 5 years not wanting to spend money to have my wife and kids wade through bum shit and criminals to see alot of the same stuff we have here in beautiful and sane San Diego County.

A agree. I think SF has reached an inflection point and it's going to be accelerating downward from here, with far more violent crime. The police have been neutered, so why wouldn't criminals want to pillage such a nice location? They would, and they will.

Socal, he recently committed Big Bucks to purchasing in one of SF's leafy suburbs. Denial is the first of the four stages of grief.

And your car will be broken in, guaran-fucking-teed. Especially if it's an obvious rental.

Too much money concentrated in one place. The hills outside the city on the peninsula are filled with single family homes all worth $5mm. These should be razed for higher density housing.

Of course, a 7.5 quake would likely do the trick.

SF is a shitty place. It thinks it's Boston's west coast sister city but it ain't close.

It's a place of dubious (& overpriced) cultural value and full of pretenders, along with bums & thugs ... that last bit is not too dissimilar from Philadelphia.

And no, driving to Reno/Carson City NV for the cathouses is a huge waste of money. In contrast, the French-Canadian strippers and escorts, 5 hrs north of Boston in Montreal QC are awesome!

All and all, as for large size cities, really, Boston's the last man standing as many of America's cities have gone to hell in a basket including now Seattle, Minneapolis, Chicago, Philly, DC, NYC, LA, etc

I think it's better to hang out a small town like Madison WI or Burlington VT (1 hour from Quebec).
14   clambo   2021 Jan 22, 11:10am

Driving in Boston is a nightmare and the San Francisco weather and views are superior.

At least in San Francisco the girls are not as fat and nobody has Red Sox or Pats apparel.

I've seen cars with the windows rolled down and a sign "nothing valuable in this car, do not break the windows"!

I used to just tell the homeless homies near where I parked my Jeep in SF that, "The door is open and there is change in the ash tray if you want it!", "No I don't have any cash on me", as I walked off.

Nobody ever took it.

Another good quote from that site about SF:

Nearly one in twenty San Franciscans work for the city.

That was exactly same think in Greece before collapse. Sit comfortably and watch. Be ready to buy cheap real estate SF with very, very long exit strategy.

Yes. Still a lot of homeless there from my visits. It's my most preferred CA city to visit though by a long shot. I have no interest in ever visiting LA, SF or NYC in my lifetime again. Unless it's work related or convenient to travel to a more rural location from the airport.

Edit: Fuck it, I'll never go to NYC unless it's a layover to somewhere else where I don't have to leave the airport.

You keep saying that, but the landmarks are disappearing. Statues toppled, Cliffhouse and most if not all old restaurants gone. Yes it will always have nature and geographical location, but people aren't flocking to SF anymore, have you taken a look at home prices lately? Free fall. The rest of the bay area better learn their lessons here, otherwise it will be similar. There is always bias to think it's great where you live, but you can shake it off eventually. Yes, weather and nature in most of Northern Cali is close to perfect, but that's it. CA state and local governments have destroyed the state and cities, but there are smaller areas/towns where you can def still live nicely for years to come. Wine country is one of them, parts of the North bay, maybe even parts of the East bay (Walnut creek) and remote Santa cruz, but make no mistake, the shit and feces and hobos will move on to the suburbs once SF is done. SF 20 years ago was an iconic city despite it's chronic problems, now it's a deserted shithole. And maybe, a big maybe they can turn this around in the future if they sack all gov and run them out of town, but for now no chance.
23   mell   2021 Jan 23, 10:06am

By the way Boston is a shithole in many areas as well, I don't find it much more appealing than SF. And it's extremely expensive in the nicer areas. The drive from Boston International is worse than the drive on 101 on the bay area peninsula. Small towns is where it's at in the future, any state goes as long as it has in intact local government. Florida and Texas likely to gain most popularity with more blue states turning into shitholes.

I don't know because when I was a kid, Maverick Sq in East Boston was a shithole full of bums. Today, it's a beautiful neighborhood.

Savin Hill, one of the bordering regions next to the big bad three neighborhoods of Dorchester, Mattapan, & Roxbury, was called Stabbing Hill during my childhood. Students now don't fear getting knifed and have moved there with a convenient subway stop.

In addition, no one hung out in Charlestown, for much of the time before the 90s and today, it's a nice historic district not run by so-called Irish-American gangs.

And in comparison to Whitey Bulger's day, non-Irish-Americans are welcome as co-residents in South Boston without being hazed and beaten up by Will Hunting's clan.

And the Seaport district used to be an abandoned area where junkies used to lurk. Today, it's a 2nd downtown, full of offices and restaurants.

So sure, the traffic still sucks but the city is nowhere near the craphouse that a Philly or an SF is today.

And yes, Dorchester, Mattapan, and Roxbury are still dangerous but you can find bad neighborhoods in every major city but Boston's bad sections pale in comparison to the South Side of Chicago or North Philadelphia.

Considering that it takes forever to get from any of metro NYC's three major airports to Manhattan, you won't need to worry about that.

Well I'm not committing to calling a crash outside of SF, but it's clear to me that the problems SF has are endemic to the whole area. The burbs will not default as fast as a lot of tech money is in there and there are no signs of mass layoffs at tech companies. There has been a large capital flight though of money on the sidelines ready to invest out of the Bay area and CA and that will be felt in addition to to disappearance of mom and pop stores and brick and mortar retail in general. A price correction may ultimately be good for the area and the people after some bleeding. Also don't get me wrong I'm always for a little healthy immigration from around the world with focus on Western Europe (followed by Hispanic) as they're closest to Americans, but it's long term detrimental for hoods to be 80% Chinese/Asian, Russian, Indian, persian, south/central American, government dependent dem voting plantation blacks or whatnot. It's an inconvenient truth but most if not all Caucasian Americans would love to turn back Sunnyvale into the 70s, 80s or early 90s, the times of Atari or the movie wargames.

But not the H-1's who mostly live in South Bay and Fremont areas. And illegals, if they find work in SF, commute in from East Bay.

Yes it will always have nature

The continuous smoke last summer made it impossible to enjoy nature.

The smoke will drive me away from California even more than the taxes or the "mask psychosis" of the political left here.

There is going to be a massive surge of cancer cases in California in coming years. That smoke is especially toxic. Wood smoke is extremely bad for you, and even worse when mixed with smoke from paint, plastic, and metals caused by burning houses.

Then again, I suspect that a lot of the fires were deliberately set by Pantyfa types, or even by China. Great disorder makes people want to change leaders, and China was pretty desperate for us to change leaders so that they could get back to gutting and weakening the US under a Biden presidency. So maybe there won't be so much smoke this summer because they got what they wanted.
