On Thursday, Airbnb (ABNB) announced it will not be taking new bookings and will be canceling existing ones in the Washington, D.C. area during the week of the presidential inauguration. HotelTonight, which Airbnb acquired in 2019, will also cancel all reservations.

Airbnb stands alone in this decision to implement a hardline mandate ahead of the inauguration on Jan. 20. Expedia-owned VRBO (EXPE) and all major hotel chains are keeping their doors open as the nation reels from last week’s pro-Trump insurrection and the devastating coronavirus pandemic.

There are approximately 5,000 Airbnb properties in the DC area, with hosts making an average daily rate of about $145, though the occupancy rate was about 55% this time last year, according to AirDNA, which scrapes and analyzes data on Airbnb and VRBO.

The home rental platform will be reimbursing hosts for the payouts and the company is exempting those who previously booked long-term stays and honoring requests for medical/hardship examples (which will be reviewed and confirmed by Airbnb).

This decision to block reservations fits into its “Capitol Safety Plan” it announced earlier this week, which also included banning individuals identified as involved in criminal activity during the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6 and enforcing stricter ID verification checks.

This is how supposedly freedom-loving Silly Con Valley is foisting a police state upon us.

So now the NG will have even more limited places to stay? They seem to be the only ones going to the inauguration anyway,

Is Trump going to compare audience sizes again?

He ought to. Historically, his audience is like 1000 to 1 compared to Biden. Have you ever seen the audience for Biden in a speech? It's pathetic - worse than Clinton.

We had a coup, this is obvious unless you don't trust your lying eyes. End of the republic. The next real vote will involve violence. It make take decades though to get that vote.

Of course we had a coup, but does anyone really think that Trump is going to simply live out a quiet existence in Mar a Lago? No, he's going to bad mouth the crap out of Biden's administration. The establishment folks actually believe their own propaganda that there are swarms of patriots ready to take up arms against them. Their paranoia is going to lead to hilarity.

At this point, I want it to lead to something more then just "hilarity".

I am fed up with this bullshit.

How is Airbnb able to cancel anyway? Isn't the rental contract ultimately with the owner? It would be like Coldwell Banker just cancelling a purchase contract just because. That's not the way it works. If I had deep pockets as an owner or renter I'd be suing them.

They are holding the money for the transaction, meaning they have all the power. So far nobody sued.

Nobody wants to shoot the brainwashed supporters of these evil people. We (me and like minded) want these brainwashed people to wake up, see the truth, and form their own firing squad.

I thought they just skimmed a percentage? Either way, I'm pretty sure it's a licensed real estate broker activity in most states. It's not up to them if they can cancel a rental or not. It would be a violation of license law. I could be wrong, but pretty sure I'm not. Rentals short or long term still require a license and this would be in total violation of license law if Airbnb just cancelled rentals on the owners behalf. They wouldn't be performing their fiduciary duty by having the owner lose money.
