Hmm. Heard a commentator say that Oracle and other tech giants are actually afraid of their progressive employees in California, in addition to the usual business constraints and taxation. It seems it was as I once speculated. They found that Covid gave them to pretense to disperse their own workforce in work-at-home environments, thus diminishing their ability to collude at the previous workplaces.

So, Covid was a ticket to ride to test the viability of work-at-home, and the move could be partially to encourage a workforce that is less left leaning.

Who will be next?

Will Apple's Orb become a back office backwater? Nvidia's Space Ship? Facebook? Salesforce? Will the Google City in in SJ actually be built?

There is also the reality that life is miserable around here. Apart from the H1's, the young / ambitious types they wanna hire are stressed out by the high cost of living, long commutes, etc. (That's to say nothing of the taxes and politics). The only effect those stressors can have, is to make employees less productive.

OP bought a home in the Leafy Tri-Valley just in time for the chickens to come home to roost.

In Austin Oracle can save $$$$ in taxes, as will their employees.

I'm in Silicon Valley. This is really the next Detroit, and people laugh at you when you say that.

20 years ago (actually 30) we HAD to congregate here to make the Internet infrastructure. Networking was the big thing, and we all worked to make it possible so you could make phone calls and even do two video calls (!) from home through the Internet, for FREE nearly to other continents, other states. Fuck you AT&T and long distance! - that was a dream since 1950, was a constant thing in 1960's science fiction - remember the telescreens on Star Trek? So we got that infrastructure in place.

The thing is, it's been in place for 20 years. There's no need to do centralization.

It's super expensive to live here, and culture is now woke nuts, you can't go out anywhere anyhow because of this "pandemic!", our streets suck. It used to be weird and interesting in a good way, but now it's just weird and... scary. We don't produce any fundamentally different things now. 1990's landlines to cells phones, 2d sprites to 3d graphics, desktops to laptops. 2000's clamshell phones to smart phones, laptops to tablets, 3d vector to fairly convincing CGI. 2010's have we really made anything TRULY new? Self driving cars, sort of? We've improved stuff, but I'm using a 9 year old computer at work. It's plenty fast enough.

If Trump SOMEHOW manages to make it into office again, and he doesn't bail out California, this place is imploding.

It will return to the place it was in the 1980s plus a lot more crime.

Google is all but fucked as a search engine. Youtube is going away, it's just puppy videos and a bunch of corporate news bullshit that we're on youtube to AVOID, meanwhile all the decent interesting content creators get thrown off, or you're unsubscribed form them over and over again, or the have more view counts than comments. Netflix has gone full on fucking creepy. Hollywood down south is filled with virtue signalling lunatics. Cisco, HP, and Tesla see the writing on the wall and are getting the fuck out. Facebook is still around for old people and is nothing but an echo chamber, Twitter is just advertisement for celebrities and politicians.

It's all aging boring bullshit. I don't see how any of this can be called High Tech now. I'm tempted to get the fuck out and go to some competitor of these aging dinosaur companies. Heck, it's a lot easier to make a Youtube today than it was 20 years ago. I can make the home version of it.

I wonder if Larry Ellison got sick of the smoke in California this year and just said fuck it, on top of the economic and social reasons to decamp to Texas.

Richwicks,

I am a local kid. I have fond memories of growing up in San Jose when none of us locals heard of "Silicon Valley" except in the context of Carol Doda's cleavage. In my outlook, even patrick himself is a recent arrival.

So looking forward to the changes you say will be coming. However I am not looking forward to the Death Spiral in local government services, as the local government and its civil service union partners have become addicted to the "Silicon Valley" tax revenues like it's crack cocaine.

I think the heydey here was in the 1990s. That's when the greatest advancements were made. We had to congregate somewhere to do this, and this became the place.

First, I am no oracle, but I expect it's going back to that in terms of population. I expect entire apartment complexes to be bulldozed and left as empty lots, McMansions to rot into the ground but it might take some time, like 20 years. Detroit used to be an intensely beautiful city, back in the 1950's. 1960's it started to tail off. By 1970 it had gone downhill. There's a deathgrip on the politics because democrats control it.

I don't think that death grip will exist here though.

There's still expectation that things will "come back", I've seen new strip malls built recently. There's a condominium being built after tearing down an apartment complex (quite big actually).

"Oracle Poisons Texas With California Blue Cancer! Dilutes It's Psychotic Progressive Employee Group At Texas' Expense!"''

,

Companies like Tesla and Oracle moving to California.

That means the ones who have to show up to the office for these companies will go along with them with the move.

And that means less likely those who work from home (WFH) for these companies will leave California. Maybe they'll move to Texas also to be closer to the home base.

What does that mean for California real estate (i.e., apartments, etc.) if this business exodus trend continues over the next few years ?

I'll be happy to! It will be interesting to see this place decay.

We deserve it. Major companies here have betrayed the nation and the Constitution.
