#FuckFacebook..

This has been known for what, a decade now? People still sign up to be the product, not the customer, by the millions every year.

A simple solution - get off the fucking facebook
5   MisdemeanorRebel   2020 Nov 18, 10:26am

And put it in the HOSTS file. Logging off is not enough.

Delete the damned account. That should do it.

The trackers are built into most internet sites, even if you're no longer/not a facebook member. It also speeds the F out of some sites. Choke their asses off entirely!

I don't have enough computer knowledge to meddle with this, but I use Brave browser which hopefully cuts off facesucker spying.

This.

Never use Facebook, at all, for anything.

If you have a Mac, you can install Little Snitch (not free) but it makes it easy to block Facebook etc.

Until the next MacOS update, which will break the ability to block spying on you.

I'd suggest using Ghostry. Speaking of which ... patnet is finally using a script (polyfill)! OK, I'll turn Ghostry off for patnet.

@SunnyvaleCA What kind of script do you mean?
13   BayArea   2020 Nov 18, 10:34pm

Why the hell are people using Facebook?

What, they're calling the login cookie a "tracker"?

The only thing this site tracks is whether you're logged in or not. It has no scripts from any other site. Do a "view source" of any page.

YouTube videos are tracking you and reporting what you watch back to Google, but should I ban them?

Yeah, that hardly sounds fair.

Honestly, what you should do is enter incognito/private mode to watch any video and when you close that window, cookies and other information is lost to the tracker.

Doesn't really matter, youtube is about to become irrelevant anyhow. All they do is promote propaganda and puppy videos (and I do like me some puppies!) but it's becoming a wasteland for anything intellectual. It's about as bad as I remember television to be back in the early 1990s. 100 channels, nothing to watch.

I do watch all the YouTube stuff in a Firefox with cookies and localstorage disabled. But its kind of a pain to switch back and forth between Brave and Firefox.

I plan to write a Brave plugin that will call Firefox just for YouTube videos.

What would you recommend investing in to unwind my investment in Facebook? I’ve made about 500% return since my initial investment. Hard to get out when the P/E is so low compared to other tech stocks.

Tesla went up insanely over years. Don’t know if it’ll keep going, but it’s done very well.

I would feel better about it if it wasn’t up 800% this year. Feel like if something happened to Elon the stock would fall 90% overnight. Tesla shorts are nuts enough to put a hit out on him...haha. Unlike Steve Jobs slow death to cancer... when the company was making billlions a quarter... Tesla still needs its cult leader for its stock valuation.

Yeah I know what you mean. That 800% is nuts. I have no idea if it’ll keep going, the trade volume for it makes no sense considering low market cap.

Just gonna leave it and let it ride.

It made sense to invest like $1k in every tech IPO of the last decade on the day of the IPO.... even though you would have lost money in the first few months.

Not sure if that is the case going forward for AirBnB, DoorDash and other recent tech IPOs. But I’d be willingly to gamble some... seems like the market as a whole has caught on to this strategy and they both were bid up quite a bit on recent IPO. Even media darling IPOs like SNAP from 2017 is almost 4x it’s IPO price... even though it dropped to $5 share in 2018... (wish I’d bought then....would have a 10 bagger in 2 years)

Why? Brave plays YouTube videos just fine, and has the added benefit of cutting all the ads. Seriously, you can watch dozens of YouTube videos in a row without any ad videos coming up either between or during watching. All without signing in.

Not sure if AirBnB is really "tech," but rather a way to skirt rules and fees that established hoteliers must deal with. If you had bought the similar philosophy Uber or Lyft during their IPOs, you would still be down today.

@HeadSet Because YouTube stores cookies and writes to localstorage. Maybe I should just view them in porn mode.

I see. Brave does have an incognito with tor mode, so maybe I will try that.

I got in in 2018 and out in 2020. Did well, but it just kept right on going up.

Oh well, you can't lose by winning.

Once can setup using https://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm
In case of Linux, just download file and move it to /etc/hosts
also add the following entries in /etc/hosts
0.0.0.0 facebook.com
0.0.0.0 www.facebook.com

when try to reach https://www.facebook.com or facebook.com
brave shows "This site can’t be reached"
firefox shows "Unable to connect"
but opera with vpn turned on, it reached facebook since it tunnels all the traffic to vpn server!
Good part is /etc/hosts eliminates about 10k sites directly or any site cross refer them.
