This year just keeps getting worse and worse. 1984 was the first cassette I owned...around 11 years old. Not one of their well known songs, but I really like it:

Oh wow, he has been poor health for decades. He was always going for that Keith Richards, rustic look, but he never had the resiliency.

Metastatic tongue cancer. 65 was a ripe old age for how he treated his body.

Not mocking. Never heard the song. I like it a lot. They could have done with better lead singers, which is why I've never liked them (Hagar or DLR). Also still think his guitar playing is overrated. Amazing for sure, but there are a ton of other guitarist that are better. Drums were pretty weak too on that track for what could have been done. Cool song in my book either way.

Boomers are a dying. There is going to be a bunch of "greats" dying over the next 4-5 years.

It's like catching lightening in a bottle when a group of musicians click and create a magical sound. You can't replace one single one of the players, and keep what you have.
And so many times, the egos of the folks in bands, get the better of them. They reach the point, where they believe they are better off on their own, playing with a band on salary, or the band thinks they are better off without a member. The Solo jack ass never makes it anywhere near as spectacular as what he had with the band. And the band that replaces a key member, never recaptures what they had with him. Sammy Hagar and VH were not a good combination. And any decent band with their budget could have done better.

As for Eddie, I think 84 was the start of his bad playing. Had DRL not left VH, he might have came back around. But going on with SH, and realizing the dynamics had changed that they were no longer VH. Eddie kept with that minimalist style heavily depending on bending a sustained note through half of a song. Gone was his power cord progressions, that he would anchor squealing fast classical fingering exercises over. Which was pretty much the whole LA guitarist sound at the time Eddie came along.
They were all just doing Classical Guitar scales, fingerings and exercises through a JCM800 Marshall, with over drive and distortion. No wah, no phase, delay or none of that. Just hard Marshal crunch and over driven leads. It was the LA metal sound in the late 70's and early 80's. Just put that out there, because it irks me to hear him memorialized as the guy who invented his sound. When Randy Rhodes, Niki Sixx, and many others were also just answering the British and Scottish Metal invasion.

Isn't 65 like 110 in rock 'n roll years?

He must have had information that would lead to the arrest of Hillary Clinton.

That is a risk, but my bet is that it was just plain old smoking that got him.

I read he believed it came from a metal pick he used to lodge in his mouth for many years on tour.

Just read about the pick thing. That doesn't make a ton of sense unless it was lead. Cancer is a fucked up monster either way. My Dad passed with what started as lung cancer. White collar attorney, no factory work, no dangerous substances and no smoking. Zero explanation for getting lung cancer from his daily behaviors. Got rid of the lung cancer, but then got liver cancer. Not a big drinker either. Took about 8-9 years, but finally did him in summer of '19.

It's part of the reason why Covid pisses me off so much. We have cancer that kills way more people every year, but this random flu bug comes around and shuts everything down and kills way less people. I'd rather have Covid stick around and take the risk and we finally figure out cancer.
