India is the No. 1 country in the world for open defecation, with over 344 million people without regular access to toilets in the country, according to 2017 statistics from the World Health Organization and UNICEF. If you add up Nos. 2 to 10, it still wouldn't come close to India's number, showing just how big the problem is there.

Huge strides have been made to reduce that figure through Swachh Bharat and other sanitation efforts. WHO and UNICEF report the number of people practicing open defecation was twice as high in 2000, at 764 million.

How did India become the No. 1 country for open defecation in the first place?
Overpopulation and a lack of sanitation infrastructure have contributed to this health crisis. Additionally, India has often failed to properly maintain public toilets after the're built.

Cultural behaviors play a big role too. Purity is an inherent part of toilet etiquette in India. According to common customs, toilets are often built outside the home and deemed unclean. That means many people in India still see open defecation as a more sanitary option than using a bathroom in or near the home. Because of this, even after the government builds new toilets for people, they will go unused, instead functioning as storage rooms.

"In order to change that you need to change people's behavior, and that can take quite a long time," Slaymaker added.

This is one of the outcome of commie gov failure in providing basic underground infrastructure. India is massively suffering from none functioning and unaccountable overstaffed bureaucrats and ministers and their massive corruptions by controlling public with devide and conquer to keep in perpetual state. If India can fix commie problem, many get fixed including toilets.

India has been a secular federal republic since 1950, governed in a democratic parliamentary system.
Looks like somebody blue it...

When they do build it, folks refuse to use it anyway.

Whereas Bangladesh was able to virtually eliminate open defecation years ago.

Sounds like a cultural change. They should go into the rural areas and educate and convince them, and make changes based on feedback from rural villagers.

You forgot about the Dictator Indira Ghandi and the Congress iron-fist control of India until the 1990s.

Bollywood is still controlled by Congress Party apparatchiks. As any centerright Indians, exactly what is happening with Hollywood here, except there it is all about pissing on Hindu History and praising "Cosmopolitan" Muslim figures from the past, who get much sanitized (ie it leaves out all their beatings and oppression of Kaffirs, the Jizya, etc)

Good point.
There is no enforcement all all. All Cops are clowns who are busy working for self serving political and bureaucrat goons classes who are in turn busy looting working class under the name of "working for poor and minorities" who are lazy and anti national red(commie) and green(Islamic) terrorists and made India second highest bomb blasting country in the world and their well connected money laundering to entities like Mullawood (aka Bollywood) and their drug, sex mafia etc.

For the last 2 decades India progressed mostly under unorganized sector where the commie gov has little control over for easy loot.

Toilet is least of India's problems compare to the massive pain inflicted by blood sucking mega commie political and bureaucrat classes. Its is not the people or culture that is causing the issue its the systems and institutions in place that have been transferred (indirectly by Hitler and directly by Bose) from colonial era to their commies agents like Mohammedan Gandhi, Nehru who lost in elections. Commie political class is not interested to changed anything as they are good for controlling the people as per the system design by divide and conquer and to make everyone is unequal under the law. The current gov which not full blown commie is trying to make changes but there is a massive challenge from commies both from in and out of power who are anti establishment.

In my anecdotal observation, there are 20% commies in the country but 80% commies in gov.

You are correct. More money was spent explaining the benefits than actual buildings and left-liberals started accusing of mis-using of Tax-money.

The same can be said about the US federal bureaucracy. That a large percentage of the career civil servants are very loyal to the Democrat Party and allow that to affect their work decisions and actions.

They even heavily damaged a $3 billion submarine because one of the sailors taking a dump outside forgot to close the hatch when he came back in.

Utter nonsense. Indira Gandhi tried to be a dictator but was ceremonially dumped in the elections. She was probably the most awful leader India has seen, until the arrival of the current Modi regime. She wasn’t a communist however, more of a kleptocrat, promoting and protecting crony capitalists.

Right.
After the marriage this bitch (this is how Henry Kissinger mentions her in wiki leaks!) name became, Indira Feroz Khan / Maimuna Begum but officially Indira Gandhi for public consumption for fools, narrated by sex predators Muhammadan Gandhi and her (hope) dad Nehru.

She declared martial law and cancelled elections to avoid prosecution for corruption, I heard.

I gotta read some good Indian modern history, happy to take recommendations of books.

I have the infamous Ghandi book, but it's elsewhere right now.
