You know, as someone who spent 4 years in college and 6 years in grad school, I never quite bought into the whole Universities are indoctrinating students mantra. Sure, there was affirmative action and things like that. But I was in a science department, where we collectively ridiculed the liberal arts. Last month, a number of my former high school students, now in college, wrote letters to our board of education where I teach. After reading their views on how the high school supposedly "failed them", their newfound views on systemic racism and so called segregation....it's 100% true, if not worse than we ever thought. These are kids coming from a super rich, sheltered, mostly white community, where us as teachers usually have to deal with their influential helicopter parents. We constantly tell them how they have no idea what other towns or cities are like and they just brush us off like we are bullshitting them.
