I do think these stings are questionable and the rich and influential pedophiles will not need to fall for these traps. But it's a bit similar to saving your life by not resisting cops pointing a gun at you. Nerds need to follow the script and when they hear underage stop the convo. The law is the law and it's fairly easy to follow. On the upside you can still legally bang an 18 year old when you're 80.

They describe this guy in ways that specifically help relate him to their reader base ("He was a voracious reader who could knock off a 1,000-page fantasy novel in two days."), so that they personally relate to him and will be more sympathetic.

And then they try to discount the fact that the girl straight up, blatantly told him she was 13 when they started texting, before he went to her house. They try to use weak arguments that he has good reason to doubt that her claim of being 13 years old was true, and that a rational person would have thought she was older.

Again she claimed to be 13. The photo seemed to tell a different story, and the gaming chair she was seated in looked too expensive for a kid. She used slang a 13-year-old probably wouldn’t know, like “FTP” — “[expletive] the police” — that originated in ’80s hip-hop. The vulgarities and snide tone seemed too adult.

Theyre crying foul because this "girl" was not 13, but rather in her 20s, and just said she was 13. And she looked and acted like a girl in her 20s. Of course, its normal for a man in his 20s to be attracted to a woman in her 20s. But, he's also expected to keep his hands off of all 13 yr olds, no matter what they look or act like. Some 13 yr olds truly look like adults, but theyre still children.

I guess the only sympathy I can offer this guy is that he may have really thought it was ok to go into her house to try to figure out if she was really 13, as long as he didnt try to make a move on her until he was certain of her age. But its a big stretch, and affording pedos that level of leniency would probably endanger children. I doubt the guy would have demanded ID, and likely would have just hit it because she looked 20, despite saying shes 13.
