I came over to Patrick.net years ago when it was primarily a real estate forum. I’ve learned several key points over the years that have had profound impact on my thinking. Thanks to Patrick and all the members here for the exchange of ideas regardless of your political or religious orientation.

I’d like to hear what stands out for you over the years in terms of things you learned that were eye opening. I’ll start:

1.) Recognizing the incentives and conflicting personal wins for all parties involved in a real estate transaction. If you haven’t read “Housing Trap”, it’s great.

When the smoke clears, there are several political points that are of importance to me. I realized them only after countless debates and idea exchanges here:

2.) America first! Bring jobs back from China. For years I was pounded with the idea that globalization is the new world order. It’s not. America and US citizens should be put first.

3.) Speaking as an immigrant who is a US citizen: I am against the mass importation of cheap labor from places like Mexico, India, China, and Eastern Europe for the benefit of corporate profits. Again Americans first!

4.) I used to think of the NRA as a radical nutjob organization. However, what I learned over time is that there is no such thing as “fair and reasonable” gun laws. The political left will never cease in trying to achieve a total firearms ban, which they will never admit. But the truth of the matter is that with every shooting, the left will push towards a total ban. The NRA knows this, and refuses to give an inch. This is part of our freedom.

5.) The candidate that I choose for President has nothing to do with how they present or what feelings they hurt. Instead it has all to do with their political positions aligning with my own.

6.) The tax rules on used car purchases are a travesty. It’s wrong for the Gov to collect sales tax every time a used car changes hands. Take a $55k Lexus bought new in 2010. The government collects $5k sales tax. Two years later the car is sold for $40k, and the Gov collects $3.6k, and so on. It’s wrong!

Why? Wasn't it inevitable with the internet?

Certainly I learned that things were not as I thought. Turned out to be much worse, more disappointing, less honest.

I learned that there is definitely on PatNet a strong and harsh bias against fake tits vs natural ones.

I mean, c'mon! Tits are tits! Can't we just enjoy them all?

I credit this site for getting me a smoking deal on my forever home back in 2011. I drove my realtor crazy visiting close to 100 homes over a 2 year period and wouldn't settle.

I also credit this site for making me a soon to be new gun owner when I get to pick up my Glock 19 next weekend.
9   stereotomy   2020 Aug 23, 9:34am

The old Patrick.net site had some very interesting links, among them iTulip (major hat tip to Patrick for this). Through finding that site, I avoided the 2008/2009 meltdown and actually doubled my money. I was living in Austin at the time, and the housing bubble was unfathomable and in full malicious rage . I despaired about being able to own my own home, but Patrick was one of the few sane voices, so I held out against the insanity.

I'm still a renter, but I'm through the looking glass and keeping my now substantial powder dry. I'm glad I didn't mortgage my future away, and in these uncertain times, I have the ability to pick up stakes and move to greener pastures when needed as opposed to being saddled with the albatross of mid- to high-6-figure debt.

Thanks Patrick.

Picked mine up last Friday. The entire process of finding one, paperwork, background etc took 3mo (most of that time was finding one since everyone was sold out due to all the riots which spike sales). Background check was just under 3wks.

Also, as someone who has shot guns at ranges for over 5yrs, if you don’t shoot/practice at least on a quarterly basis, I’m of the belief that you have no business owning a firearm.

I credit this site for giving me a better understanding of Political fuckery between the two parties, and allowed me to put my finger on it, and inform others rationally what's going on. Without getting caught or stuck in Ad hominem attacks, sent down a path chasing red herrings and straw-men arguments.
I now know enough, that I can tell if someone is just misinformed or stuck in their ways, or if they actually know what's going on, and are part of it. You can't reason with those guys, they are doing exactly what they were taught.

Without Patnet I would not know about.

Strawmen arguments
Red Herrings
Occam's razor
Overton window
Schrödinger's cat
Cloward-Piven strategy
Saul Alinsky - Rules for Radicals

I got a more of a political enlightenment than a finance education, from this site. Once you understand all of those concepts listed above.
You're able to talk politics beyond the typical lazy American approach to politics which is just give up and lament,... "It's all rigged anyway, and the rich gets richer while the poor gets poorer" or "It's all the Illuminati's fault."
Which that's another thing Patnet has enlighten me on. We used to just call them "They" and put all of the Grift, Fraud and deceit under the incognito umbrella of labeling them all Illuminati. Now we actually have names for the people, and know their whole network organization structure and SOP.
People come to me, to explain what's going on, because even most in the Media don't have an understanding what they are reporting on, or are not being honest.

At work although they are mostly Liberal Democrat voters, they respect my perspective and would never dare to argue politics with me. They treat me like a Political Science professor. But nah! I'm just a Pathead that read too much crap with too much time on my hands over the years.
13   Tenpoundbass   2020 Aug 23, 10:04am

How does Schrödinger's cat fit in a political discussion you might ask?

Well you have a box and inside you have a Cat, that cat can either be wearing a mask, or not wearing a mask. When you open the box. If they are rioting against the police they don't need a mask, if the are protesting the oppression of a fake pandemic then they must wear a mask.

Multiple co workers lost their expensive homes they paid way too much for in 2005-2006 and couldn’t afford anymore when those 5 year ARM’s reset.

Two of them cost themselves an early retirement because of it.
15   Tenpoundbass   2020 Aug 23, 6:56pm

I knew straight away it was a bubble, and was very frustrated nobody else did. They thought the government would protect them from ever letting the market crash.
I was treated like a foolish person for not taking the opportunity to get a cheap mortgage and buy a house that my whole wages could barely pay. A coworker told me about Patnet mockingly, telling me to go here, that I would be in good company of people crying wolf the sky is falling. That was the first time I heard the term "Housing Bubble" or Bubble anything.
One thing I found common here, was how smart most everyone was. I think if you were wise enough to see through the bubble, you're were way ahead of your average person that buys into every hysteria and hype. And those people still do, every single one, while most Patheads don't.

That's always been my biggest take away, even the Liberals here were brilliant when they weren't trying to tell you how to think politically.

There were those who saw it and even made money off it. Watch The Big Short. Awesome film.

Everyone knew they were shorting the market and at the same time, thought the prices would keep climbing, until THEY decided they made enough money.
I knew lots of people that had three paid off houses, parlayed into one or two McMansions and lost it all.

Since the police/DA offices don't seem to be tossing the crooks with firearms (illegally owned, as criminals are not allowed to own guns) in jail, I want no new gun laws until the ones on the books are being enforced.

Absolutely agree
20   Patrick   2020 Aug 23, 10:02pm

A few things in life are very clear to me, and I want to share what I know to be true.

One is that there is a conspiracy of realtors, mortgage brokers, banks and others who live by getting buyers to take on stupidly large mortgages. They are expert at psychological manipulation, since they do it all the time. They care as much about the buyer's family suffering as a wolf cares about a deer it's going to eat.
21   GreaterNYCDude   2020 Aug 24, 7:27am

I learned to think for myself and look beyond the short term. It was nice to be proven right in the end. As its.morphed beyond housing , this place has also proven time and time again that many are ahead of the curve and see whats comming well ahead of most "regular" people.

I'd like to see the government enforce immigration laws, too.

Now you're asking for the world.

I simply want those, caught flashing a glock at a convenient store or a home burglary, with a criminal background, behind bars. It's really not that hard for the police and DA office to pull it off.

I mean it's challenging for a US citizen, with a criminal background, to play the "refugee" card and get a stay of deportation.

What most Lib’s fail to understand is that Democrats are only supporting illegal immigration as a result of their corporate /union / land developers contributions to their political campaign fund chests .Corporate and big land developers interests are on cheap labor , unions trying to fill their dwindling enrollment ( heck you no longer have to speak English or have a HS diploma or equivalent to join trades now ) . If one looks at the history of the Clintons , Pelosi , and so forth you’ll find them on the opposite end of the spectrum until recently -Corporate funding and so called progressive voters have led us to this problem, which is fleecing the middle class taxpayers to the breaking point

Yes, agreed. Hadn't thought about unions wanting illegals, but that makes sense too.

Disagree here. Unions have no interest in organizing illegals, and it goes contrary to Union member's interest to allow illegals in the workforce. But Unions are no longer about their members interest, as the major Unions have morphed into a agency whose sole mission is to deliver votes to the Dems (and occasional RINO).. Majors unions support unfettered illegal immigration solely because that is what the Dems want.

I generally agree with this, but there are some caveats.

In a state like IL we also have prevailing wage laws that are basically tied to what the unions think non-union workers should get paid. Illegal immigrants are not going into the union, they can't take them. So they'll get hired by private sector businesses that are now forced to pay someone a "union wage" so to speak if they're doing work for the government. The union has the government in their pocket, so these small businesses get strong armed into paying inflated wages for menial jobs. Like a non-CDL guy driving an F-250 getting paid $35/hr.

Then the union spies (yes spies) on these private sector businesses to make sure they're paying the prevailing wage. One of the unions main purposes is to put other private small businesses out of business. Unless you have deep pockets it's a struggle. Unions made sense at one time in history. They're outdated and frankly destroy the economy. In IL they pump the wages through legislation for the competition and push for open borders because they know the small businesses will hire them and they'll catch them in the act not paying prevailing wage to someone with no recourse because they're not a citizen. It's a fucking sick game.
