BEN LOMOND, CALIF. — Wildfires ravaged and menaced communities from Napa’s wine country to the coast above Santa Cruz on Friday, forcing California officials to make tough choices on which ones to fight as the state braced for a weekend that could include more lightning strikes.
In some places, officials said they were being turned down for state help and left to beg equipment and manpower from volunteers and local agencies.
“Many of these firefighters have been on the lines for 72 hours, and everybody is running on fumes,” said Assemblyman Jim Wood (D-Healdsburg), whose district includes wine country areas currently under siege. “Our first responders are working to the ragged edge of everything they have.”
More than 930,000 acres have burned so far in Northern and Central California — an area larger than the land mass of Rhode Island — with little containment, in part because firefighting resources are stretched beyond capacity by the number of blazes.

...

With more need than can be met by the crews available, fire experts said state officials are now forced to prioritize which fires will get resources and change how those resources are being used.

They used to involve inmates into fighting forest fires, but this year all the inmates who would be eligible for that have been released "because covid". Another fine example of idiot donkey planning.

It's hard to find enough Firefighting Equipment Contractors who are half Lithuanian, half Leostho Lesbian left-handed albino women of Color.

Why is NG not involved? What is our so-called Governor waiting for?

Look at the cross section of (Men 99+ percent) on the front lines, and look at their ethnic diversity. Suddenly when the pedal is to the medal, diversity don't mean shit, you need people who will do the job. I don't see ghetto queens out there.

Starting to feel that way about California overall. I think it's a lost cause here. It is literally going to be a smoking ruin due to decades of Democrats.

I'm planning my escape, accumulating more details every day. Looks like it will be the Pacific Northwest for us.

ha me too Pacific Northwest! Was planing next year before Ronnie but may have get out sooner. I'll take rain over smoke any day!

A few years ago when fires were raging here in the North Bay I looked into ways to volunteer but couldn't find anything. Does anyone know a way to volunteer helping firefighters?

Pacific Northwest

I suggest Portland or Seattle...

Thursday I drove from Santa Cruz to San Diego down 101 (Salinas Valley).
It was full of smoke, it was bizarre. The air seemed to clear out by the Santa Ynez Valley.

I returned today on I-5 and once in the valley after the Tejon Pass it was full of smoke.

Up the road, I took 46 west and this was less smoky.

101 was less smoky today than Thursday, I could see fires in the Mountains to the west of 101 near Soledad, south of Salinas a bit.

I was thinking anywhere except Portland and Seattle.

CARB and CalEPA should defund themselves for causing immense damage to CA air quality and western states air quality due to negligence in allowing these emissions to occur.

Map makes USA look like an animal pointed to the right with California at its ass end.
17   REpro   2020 Aug 23, 1:20am

How much California improved air quality by charging people extra extra gas tax?

Portland? Seattle? I hear the metro areas are beautiful this time of year.

Jokes aside, when do you leave Menlo?

sarcasm, obviously - but seriously voting patterns in those states will lead to shitholization of all cities

The fucked up thing is protecting the environment is a good thing but the leftoids are so deranged that they forbid plastic straws while letting their air go to shit with yearly fires. If they only invested half of the effort they invested in bullshit such as straw bans into fire mitigation efforts instead they could actually achieve something useful and make a difference for the better. When and where did they go off the rails?!
21   MisdemeanorRebel   2020 Aug 23, 1:15pm

All signalling. It's easy to make a big to do about plastic straws (and mask wearing) in restaurants and a host of public settings.

Fire Control policy isn't so easy to wave around like a $60 PBS tote.

I see a lot of discarded masks on streets...perhaps banning polluting face masks should be considered

Not immediately, because I still have a great job. A lot depends on the stock market.

If masks and anything that touches the face, COVID being so virulent, how come municipalities haven't instructed the populace to dispose of them in special HAZMAT containers?
25   deepcgi   2020 Aug 24, 12:25am

Perhaps a dark question here, but in the event of a serious financial crisis, how would anyone tell the difference between these annual fires and arsonists (or terrorists for that matter)?

There was a fire investigator in SoCal years ago who they found out was setting a lot of fires. They made a TV show about him. He investigated his own fires.

Could just be labelling of convenience, or whether or not there are deep pockets to sue, like PG&E. There is a pat official version which is usually for politics. If they can't catch a perp, they probably don't want people to think that the perps exist, which leads the the embarrassment of their inability to catch them.
27   Patrick   2020 Aug 24, 2:02am

@deepcgi I also have been wondering at the sheer number of fires in California. I cannot believe they are all due to lightning.
28   Misc   2020 Aug 24, 2:39am

Maybe PG&E can revisit their settlement talks, as they can now claim it all would have all burned anyways from natural causes.

Anyone who takes Electric service from them should be advocating heavily for this. The way they were steamrolled into taking full responsibility for all damage caused in a few of the fires over the last three years is criminal.
