“So this guy works for the NBA but covers the Houston Rockets. Has been around for a while. Even worked for the Houston Comets. It’s amazing how people will smile in your face but eventually their true colors will show.

“@NBA and Houston Rockets he needs to GO!!! So disrespectful Bill Baptiste (sic) shame.”

I haven’t been watching NBA due to the overt in your face political crap. This seems like a good reason to make it permanent.

If he had said, "Melania is a bitch" it would have been ignored or even praised.

I understand that interest in sports in general has waned considerably. Even sports fans with decades of adherence to the dictates of game schedules aren’t ginning up the same kind of interest as before for games that nobody will remember six months from now.

If you think about it, it makes perfect sense:
1)sports watching is a cultural thing, supported by culture of sports watchers who also like to talk with each other about the games they watched. But what if you made everyone distanced from each other so that sports talk was impractical? And then let’s say you cancelled all sports for six months? People are habit-driven creatures and six months is plenty of time to drop one habit and pick up another one. Especially when all the reinforcements for that habit are still absent. Who are you going to chat with about the game or the team at the water cooler with if everyone is still working from home?
How are people supposed to play fantasy football when the very game of football is uncertain? And how do people bet on squares when they aren’t meeting in person? I mean, you can. But it takes technical work and it’s not at all satisfying.

I had a pool party for my boy yesterday. He’s been playing video games with his friends for months, rarely seeing them, not because I have prevented it but because his friends parents are being good little covidians. It was a treat to watch them playing and wrastling around on a giant float like boys should be doing. You could just tell that being in actual physical contact meant a lot more to them than playing a game online.

Same with sports. Sports are meant for physical contact. Whether it’s hoisting beers and bumping bellies at a stadium or yelling at the tv in a bar, or drinking on the coach with your best friend while talking about the team and watching them play... all of that needs social contact to really work, NOT social distancing.

The longer this pandemic goes on, the less relevant sports teams will be.
